Admission to Earlham College

Introduction

Earlham strives to enroll a diverse student population reflecting a broad range of intellectual interests and lived experiences. The College seeks individuals who demonstrate both academic achievement and personal accomplishments. Good students who can also show commitments to the values that underlie Earlham's character — a concern for social justice, for peace, for personal and social integrity — are strongly encouraged to apply for admission to Earlham.

In assessing applications, the Admissions Office considers an applicant's high school record or other evidence of academic performance; an essay or sample academic and creative works; reference letters from teachers and counselors; and the results of the SAT or the ACT (including the writing portion). If you have had a personal interview with one of our admissions counselors, a report of that interview also is considered.

Earlham expects applicants to have completed at least 15 academic high school units or the equivalent, four in English, three in mathematics, and two or more in a second language, in science, and in history or social studies. Experience in the area of studio or performing arts is very desirable. If you have held a summer job or have served your community, we are eager to hear about these experiences. Other experiences that tend to enhance your application and show you to be a good fit with Earlham include participation in a student leadership position, internships, foreign exchange programs, summer studies and athletics.

We strongly recommend that you visit Earlham's campus and interview with one of our counselors. Together, the visit and the interview are invaluable tools for helping you and us discover whether Earlham is the right college for you. Appointments for day-long or overnight visits and for interviews may be made a week in advance. During a visit you can expect to meet students, attend classes, arrange to speak with a professor (if you wish), and enjoy a tour of the campus. Your visit will help you determine whether this place that brings together academic excellence and rigor within an environment of collaboration and cooperation is for you. For more information about visiting, see www.earlham.edu/admissions. To schedule a visit, contact us at visit@earlham.edu.
