Designed for riders ranging from the beginning cyclist to the more advanced cyclist. Students cover distances of eight to 40 miles during a class period. Bikes and helmets required. (W)

An introduction to canoeing on local lakes and rivers, including an overnight trip on one of the most picturesque rivers in the state. (W)

An introduction to the sport of climbing. Involves four introductory classes and an additional 12 documented hours of open climbing. (W)

*AWPE 202 INTRODUCTION TO THE VERTICAL WORLD (.5 credits)
An introduction to the skills and activities of the vertical world including climbing, rappelling, rope ascension, zip-lines and high ropes course activities. Highly recommended for those interested in working for the Challenge Education Program or the Solomon Climbing Wall. (W)

Downhill skiing at Perfect North Slopes near Cincinnati. Six trips are planned. For beginner and intermediate skiers. (W)

Proper technique and etiquette for cross country skiing outdoors. (W)

*AWPE 207 BACKPACKING (.5 credits)
Backpack in the Appalachians over Fall Break! Trip open to beginners. Involves a pre-trip meeting and a three-day backpacking trip in a southeastern wilderness area (West Virginia, Virginia, Kentucky or Tennessee). (W)

Includes an introductory caving trip to Indiana caves. (W)

*AWPE 209 INTRODUCTION TO TRAIL BUILDING (.5 credits)
A hands-on introduction to the tools, skills, and techniques of trail construction. Topics include stepping stones; water bars; basic bridge construction; trail clearing and re-vegetation techniques; and erosion minimization. (W)

*AWPE 223 BEGINNING LAP SWIMMING (.5 credits)
For students who are already proficient in the basic skills of swimming, and who are interested in working on distance and conditioning in the water. (W)

Explores techniques for teaching basic and advanced swimming skills and strokes to all ages. (W)

Explores more advanced climbing movement and skills. Includes a trip to the River Gorge, a world famous climbing destination in Kentucky. (W)

*AWPE 329 LIFETIME WELLNESS (3 credits)
Fulfills two activity requirements of Wellness Requirement. Designed for all Earlham students, with a special focus on first-year and transfer students. Guided by the Earlham Wellness model of Body/Mind/Spirit/Community, this course fosters an understanding of wellness and the tools necessary to incorporate healthy behaviors into daily lives. (W)

*AWPE 404 ADVANCED ROCK CLIMBING (.5 credits)
Rock climb at one of the hottest climbing areas in the United States! Trip involves a pre-trip meeting, several indoor sessions and a weekend trip to Kentucky's Red River Gorge, a world-class climbing destination and beautiful fall location. (W)
