The Major

I. INTRODUCTORY COURSES

Complete both of these courses as early as possible:

  • ENG 302 Introduction to the Study of Literature

  • ENG 308 Poetry

II. HISTORICAL STUDY OF LITERATURE

Choose and complete four courses from the following list — at least one must be a literature course before 1800 (ENG 351 or ENG 353) and at least one must be on U.S. Literature (ENG 357 or ENG 360):

  • ENG 351 Early English Literature

  • ENG 353 Late Renaissance and Enlightenment Literature

  • ENG 355 Romanticism

  • ENG 357 19th Century American Literature

  • ENG 359 Modern Literature

  • ENG 360 Major American Authors

  • ENG 381 Shakespeare

III. CONTEMPORARY WORLD

Choose and complete two courses from the following list:

  • ENG 462 Literature of the Industrial Age

  • ENG 463 Topics in African American Literature

  • ENG 464 Postcolonial Literatures

  • ENG 466 Contemporary Literature

  • ENG 468 Emerging Literatures

  • ENG 469 Literary Criticism

IV. SPECIAL TOPICS

Choose and complete two different ENG 482 Special Topics courses. Some classes outside of the Major may fulfill this requirement. Consult your adviser.

V. SENIOR REQUIREMENTS

Complete both:

  • ENG 488 Senior Capstone Experience

  • Comprehensive Exams to be taken in January of the Senior year
