Students interested in careers in Environmental Science must complete all the requirements for a major in one of three Natural Science disciplines: Biology, Chemistry or Geosciences. Each offers a solid disciplinary major with optional courses forming a disciplinary concentration in Environmental Science.
Students receive a sound academic foundation in a broadly recognized Environmental Science discipline, exposure to the literature on environmental issues and the opportunity to learn how to develop feasible broad-based responses to environmental problems. This departmental pathway is the best preparation for further professional study in such areas as environmental chemistry, environmental engineering, forestry, wildlife management, resource assessment or regulatory work.
In addition to required and optional courses within the chosen Natural Science discipline, each student must complete:
-
ENPR 104 Introduction to American Politics
-
ENPR 242 Environmental Modeling
-
ENPR 280 Environmental Colloquium
-
ENPR 343 Economics of the Environment
-
An internship or off-campus program with an environmental emphasis: Tanzania, New Zealand, Oak Ridge Science Semester and the Semester in Environmental Science at Woods Hole are examples of appropriate Earlham-based programs.
-
BIOL 488, CHEM 488 or GEOS 488, the Senior Capstone Experience for their departmental major, with an appropriate environmental emphasis.
