A comprehensive exam that includes a written component and a two-hour individual oral examination.
Ancillary courses in other Physical Sciences are strongly recommended, especially for students anticipating careers in the geosciences or graduate school in any of the geo- or environmental sciences. In addition to their Geosciences courses, majors usually elect a course or two in college calculus, two or more laboratory Chemistry courses, and one or two Biology or analytical Physics courses as approved and recommended by the Geosciences faculty. With the prior approval of the Geosciences faculty, some upper-class courses in other Natural Sciences or Mathematics (numbered 300 or above) may substitute for as many as eight Geosciences credits in the major.
