Instructional Technology and Media (ITAM)

Instructional Technology and Media, on the lower level of Lilly Library, provides a full complement of services and facilities supporting Earlham's academic and co-curricular programs. Our services include circulating collections, classroom support, events support and media production.

ITAM manages the bulk of Earlham's film and video, audio and slide collections. The film and video collection supports the academic program and includes archives of many recent College events. The collection contains over 4,000 catalogued videotapes, DVDs, Laserdiscs and 16mm films, with particular emphasis on foreign language feature films, PBS programs and other programs of topical interest. The audio collection includes CDs, audiotapes and phonograph recordings. These materials are used to support music and language classes. An extensive collection of art slides and purchased digital image collections are also available for classroom use. ITAM has carrels for individual viewing/listening as well as two rooms to accommodate group viewings.

ITAM staff supports Earlham classes by providing media technologies within classrooms and scheduling films and videos for classroom use. Whether helping develop a presentation, instructing a class in a software application or creating materials for Web-enhanced instruction, ITAM's instructional technologists work directly with faculty and students, helping them acquire the skills to use technology effectively in the teaching and learning processes.

Convocation speakers, performances and athletic events are three types of public events supported by the staff of ITAM who add their expertise to help make the event a success. ITAM professional and student staff perform many functions — from providing sound and lighting for touring groups or College musical ensembles who perform in Goddard Auditorium, to assisting guest speakers in one of Earlham's several lecture spaces, to recording athletic events and student performances.

Finally, ITAM provides a wide variety of media production services to the Earlham community. The new Plowshares/Media Arts Lab provides a work area for students and faculty to develop their skills with digital audio and video production, graphics, Web design and other computer-based applications. ITAM makes a small collection of equipment available for students and staff to audio- or videotape subjects from student presentations to guest lecturers. We also offer limited graphic production and tape duplication.
