Newlin Center for Quaker Thought and Practice

The Newlin Center is an expression of the Quaker programs, capabilities, resources and relationships of Earlham College, and The Earlham School of Religion. The Center represents Earlham's Quaker character and mission in a public and visible way to our students, faculty, staff and those outside the Earlham Community.

The Newlin Center, housed in Virginia Cottage, aims to identify young Quaker leaders, nurture Quaker scholarship and dialogue on campus, and provide members of the Earlham and broader community with information about the Religious Society of Friends and Earlham's living Quaker character. More broadly, the Center promotes conversation and cooperation among Friends and to provides a gathering place for Friends across theological and cultural spectrums.

Quaker Enrichment and Leadership Program (QELP). This new program provides nurture and leadership opportunities for Quaker students and others who are drawn to the Religious Society of Friends. The program equips students to take their place as leaders in the diverse Quaker world. QELP offers a retreat for incoming students, a one-credit Friends Colloquium, internship opportunities, and invitations to visit area Friends Meetings and various Friends organizations throughout the country.

The Newlin Center occasionally invites Quaker Scholars in Residence to reside on the campus while conducting research; these scholars enjoy discussions with students and faculty. Soup, Spirit and Song gatherings involve the community in informal fellowship over a simple meal. Fireside Chats on Faith and Vocation is a series the Center sponsors, inviting members of the Earlham community to share their own spiritual and vocational journeys.

Virginia Cottage, a former residence on the east side of campus, is a space apart into which all members of the community are welcome. Here hospitality is extended to the community in both formal and spontaneous ways. Any department or other campus group is welcome to reserve the Fireside Room or the Garden Room for small group events, committee meetings, group discussions, classes or even weekend retreats. Students are especially welcome to come for quiet study or relaxation, individually or in small groups. For groups, advance reservations are recommended; for evening or weekend events, reservations are required.
