Living in Community

Residential Life

Earlham is a residential college with nearly 95 percent of students living in College housing. Housing arrangements are designed to contribute to learning and individual growth in a community atmosphere.

Additionally, Residence Life staff members implement an informal curriculum centered on Quaker values and the liberal arts tradition. Elements of this curriculum include: consensus-seeking as a model for making community decisions, respect for persons and the peaceful resolution of conflict.

First-year students are assigned to double rooms in one of the eight residence halls. Upperclass students participate in a housing selection process each spring and may choose from a variety of options, including a room in one of the 28 College-owned houses. Although all residential buildings are coed, specific halls are set aside to accommodate students who prefer single-sex housing. A limited number of students are granted permission to live off campus every year.
