*SPAN 101 BASIC SPANISH I (5 credits)
A communicative approach to basic Spanish emphasizing the development of language skills as well as the cultural competence needed to communicate effectively with native speakers. (D-L)

*SPAN 102 BASIC SPANISH II (5 credits)
A continuation of SPAN 101. (D-L)

SPAN 103 BASIC LANGUAGES (1-5 credits)
Occasional offerings of a basic language course in languages other than Spanish, such as Papiamentu or Catalan.

*SPAN 201 INTERMEDIATE SPANISH I (4 credits)
Continues developing conversational skills, reviewing grammar, and building vocabulary building through structured and unstructured conversations, readings and activities. Prerequisite: SPAN 101 or 102 or placement or consent of the instructor. (D-L)

SPAN 202 INTERMEDIATE SPANISH II (3 credits)
An advanced intermediate course in which students continue to improve their language skills. Often organized around a theme. Prerequisite: SPAN 201 or placement or consent of the instructor.

SPAN 301 ADVANCED SPANISH I (3 credits)
Designed to develop oral skills and increase vocabulary so that students can communicate with ease in a native context. Special attention to advanced areas of grammar and to a variety of texts to develop reading skills. Often organized around a theme or issue important to the Hispanic world. Prerequisite: SPAN 201 or 202 or placement or consent of the instructor.

SPAN 302 ADVANCED SPANISH II: INTRODUCTION TO TEXT ANALYSIS (3 credits)
Designed to introduce students to text analysis and effective writing in Spanish. May be organized around a cultural or literary theme. Prerequisite: SPAN 301 or placement or consent of the instructor.

*SPAN 305 CREATIVE WRITING (3 credits)
Designed to allow advanced language students a chance to write original works in Spanish. Prerequisite: SPAN 301 or placement or consent of the instructor. (A-AP)

SPAN 306 SPANISH LINGUISTICS I (3 credits)
A general introduction to the field of linguistics as related to Spanish. Covers phonetics, phonology, morphology and syntax in Spanish, with special attention to practical applications for understanding and improving students' language skills as well as issues for teaching Spanish to English speakers or English to Spanish speakers. Includes a writing workshop component focusing on specific problems of grammar, vocabulary and expression in students' writing. Prerequisite: SPAN 301 or placement or consent of the instructor. (AY)

*SPAN 332 HISPANIC FILM SERIES/STUDIES (1-4 credits)
Studies the development of movies and movie making in the Hispanic world. Topics vary. May be taken more than once with different topics. Prerequisites: SPAN 301 or placement or consent of the instructor. (A-AP, D-I)

*SPAN 333 TOPICS IN HISPANIC CULTURES (1-4 credits)
Designed to study aspects of the societies and cultures of the Spanish-speaking world. Topics vary. May be taken more than once with different topics. Prerequisites: SPAN 301 or placement or consent of the instructor. (D-I)

SPAN 351 TOPICS IN HISPANIC LITERATURES (1-4 credits)
Designed to allow students to engage in serious literary analysis of a specific topic. May be taken more than once with different topics. Prerequisite: SPAN 301 or consent of the instructor.

*SPAN 352 HISPANIC SHORT STORY (3 credits)
Develops an appreciation of the short story as an art form through readings and discussion of Hispanic short story. May be organized around a theme, a geographic region or historical period. After reading the works of Hispanic authors, students write their own stories. Prerequisite: SPAN 301 or consent of the instructor. (D-I) (AY)

*SPAN 353 HISPANIC DRAMA/PLAY PRODUCTION (3-4 credits)
A study of theatre in Spain, Latin America, or in U.S. Latino cultures. Analysis of several dramatic works with particular attention to the art of dramatic interpretation. Character building, improvisation and scene presentations. Includes rehearsal and public presentation of a play. Prerequisite: SPAN 301 or consent of the instructor. (A-AP) (AY)

SPAN 354 HISPANIC POETRY (3 credits)
A study of Spanish (Peninsular), Latin American or Latino poets and poetic movements, often through thematic approaches, historical periods or movements. May be taken more than once with different topics. Prerequisite: SPAN 301 or consent of the instructor.

*SPAN 406 SPANISH LINGUISTICS II (3 credits)
Continues study of aspects of Spanish linguistics, including semantics, historical linguistics, regional variations, dialets and Creoles, translation and Spanish in the United States. Independent projects in areas of students' choice. Prerequisite: SPAN 306 or consent of the instructor (D-I) (AY)

SPAN 407 TRANSLATION: THEORY AND PRACTICE (3 credits)
Considers a range of issues in translation, such as comparative stylistics, machine translation and gender in translation. Readings, discussion, and research on particular aspects of translation. Individual and group translation projects. Prerequisites may vary according to topic.

SPAN 432 MAY TERM IN CURAÇAO (3 credits)
Language and cultural immersion course offered on-site in Curaçao. Prerequisites may vary. Consent of the instructor and acceptance to the May Term off-campus program required.

SPAN 433 MAY TERM IN SPAIN (3 credits)
Special topics course offered on-site in Spain during May Term. Prerequisites may vary. Consent of the instructor and acceptance to the May Term off-campus program required.

SPAN 434 MAY TERM IN MEXICO (3 credits)
Language and cultural immersion course in Spanish, offered on-site in Cuautla, Mexico. Prerequisites may vary. Consent of the instructor and acceptance to the May Term off-campus program required.

*SPAN 455 CHICANO LITERATURE (3-4 credits)
Offered in English. Focuses on Chicano literary texts, film and history from the mid-60s to the present. Explores resistance literature of the 60s and 70s and the emergence of Chicana feminist literature of the 80s and 90s as well as the cultural forces shaping movements. Prerequisite: A 300-level literature course in any Humanities department or consent of the instructor. (D-D)

SPAN 456 PENINSULAR NARRATIVE (4 credits)
Focuses on readings and discussion of selected authors and/or narrative literary movements in Spain. May be organized around a special topic. May be taken more than once with different topics. Prerequisite: At least one course at or above SPAN 352 or consent of the instructor.

SPAN 457 LATIN AMERICAN NARRATIVE (4 credits)
Focuses on readings and discussion of selected authors and/or narrative literary movements in all or part of Latin America. May be organized around a particular theme. May be taken more than once with different topics. Prerequisite: At least one Spanish course at or above SPAN 352 or consent of the instructor.

*SPAN 458 U.S. LATINO LITERATURE (3 credits)
Offered in English. Considers texts written by Cuban, Dominican, Puerto Rican and other Latino-Americans, predominantly writers who either grew up in or came to the U.S. at a young age, and who explore issues of identity and culture conflict. Prerequisite: A 300-level literature course in any department or consent of the instructor. (D-D)

*SPAN 459 COMPARATIVE LITERATURES (4 credits)
Develops students' appreciation of texts from various countries or regions. Texts may be read in translation or in the original language. Prerequisites may vary according to theme. (CP, D-I with appropriate topics)

SPAN 475 GRAMMAR TRANSLATION (1-3 credits)
Focuses on advanced grammar issues in Spanish, especially applied to translations between Spanish and English. Prerequisite: Consent of the instructor.

SPAN 481 INTERNSHIP (1-4 credits)
Students should consult a faculty adviser before registration.

*SPAN 482 SPECIAL TOPICS (3 credits)
Selected topics determined by the instructor for upper-level study. (CP, D-D, D-I with appropriate topics)

SPAN 484 FORD/KNIGHT COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH PROJECTS (1-4 credits)
Collaborative research with faculty funded by Ford/Knight Program.

SPAN 485 INDEPENDENT STUDY (1-4 credits)
Covers material not taught in regularly offered courses. Intended for advanced students who have developed a special interest in Hispanic Studies, such as a literature project, a cultural theme or some other independent research. Independent Study proposals must be approved by the Department. Only one 485 course may be counted toward a Spanish Major or Minor. Prerequisite: Consent of the instructor.

SPAN 488 SENIOR CAPSTONE EXPERIENCE (4 credits)
Part of the Spanish and Hispanic Studies Major's senior comprehensive exams. Involves a substantial project or paper.
