ECS Network Storage Guide

Each student at Earlham has by default 150 MB of space to store files and 35 MB to store e-mail on the campus network. You can access the file storage space from your personal computer and also from the lab machines. This will allow you to swap files back and forth without using a floppy or zip disk. Earlham has implemented a Self-Service Quota utility that will allow you to increase your network storage space if needed for a class or other reasons.

Using the Lab Machines: Windows

When you log in, on the right side of the desktop, three hard disk icons will appear. The drive named "Homes" is your personal network space.

Using the Lab Machines: Macs

On the right side of the dock are two white icons that look like a scroll on top of a square. If you hover the mouse cursor over the icon on the right, it will reveal the name "Mount Network Drives." Click this icon. Enter your password and the network drives will appear on the desktop. Your personal space will be the drive with your user name.

Using your Personal Machine: Windows XP/2000

To set up network storage on your home machine, click "My Network Places" on the Desktop. On the left hand side, under "Network Tasks," click "Add a Network Place." Click "Next," then "Choose another network location." In the "Internet or network address" box type: ftp://pax.earlham.edu. Click next. Uncheck "Log on anonymously" and enter your Earlham user name. Name the network place "Earlham Storage" or something you will remember. Now you can use your user name and password to log on to Earlham network space. To use this folder in the future, just open up "My Network Places" and the folder will be there with the name you gave it.

Using your Personal Machine : Mac OS X

In the title bar, click "Go-> Connect to Server." Type "pax.earlham.edu" in the server address box. Click "Connect." Enter your Earlham user name and password. Choose the drives you wish to mount. The drive with your user name is your personal space. To access this drive again, drag it onto the dock or make an alias.

I Can’t Delete This File!!!

Sometimes you will try to delete a file on the network and find that it cannot be deleted. To delete it, first, make sure that it has not been opened and is still in use by an application. Also, try logging out and logging back in. If it still will not delete itself, try waiting a day or so.

What’s this WWW folder?

In your personal space is a WWW folder. This is the folder for your personal website. Anything placed into this folder will be accessible at http://www.earlham.edu/~yourusername/. Of course, you can ignore this folder if you don’t want to make a website or make files accessible on the Internet, but that’s what it’s here for.

What if I need a website for my group?

E-mail the Help Desk at helpdesk@earlham.edu.
