Using the Projectors

Using Windows

To use sound, you will need a 1/8" stereo mini to mini cable, which should already be connected to the projection system. If there is no audio cable connected to the system, contact ITAM (Instructional Technology and Media).

To connect your laptop to the display, connect the vga cable (which should be attached to the DISPLAY 1 or 2 port on the projection system) to your laptop. If sound is desired, plug the 1/8" stereo mini to mini cable into the audio port on the projection system (if it is not connected there already) and the other end into the headphone jack of your laptop. Windows should automatically detect the second display.

If this does not work, and you are using a Dell, hold down the FUNCTION key (lower left corner of the keyboard) and press F8. If you are not using a Dell, or that does not work, open the Control Panel. Click Display. If you do not see Display, click "Show classic view" on the left sidebar. On the Display window, click the Settings tab. Double click on the second display. Make sure that "Extend my Windows dekstop to this monitor" is not checked unless you know what you're doing.

Using a Mac

If you are using an iBook or PowerBook, you will need a VGA adapter. This is a white cable that plugs into your laptop on one end and has a trapezoidal shape on the other. You may have received one with your laptop; if not, you will need to borrow one from a friend or professor or purchase one from Apple. These adapters are not provided to students by ECS. To use sound, you will also need a 1/8" stereo mini to mini cable, which should already be connected to the projection system. If there is no audio cable connected to the system, contact ITAM (Instructional Technology and Media).

To connect your laptop to the system, connect the vga cable (which should be attached to the DISPLAY 1 or 2 port on the projection system) to the adapter and then the adapter to your laptop. If sound is desired, plug the 1/8" stereo mini to mini cable into the audio port on the projection system and then into the headphone jack on your laptop. The Mac should automatically recognize the projector display; if the projector has warmed up and you do not see an image, press the F7 (Mirroring) key on your laptop. Pressing this key makes both displays show the same image.
