Recent Activities
Earlham students and faculty have, for years, carried on curricular and extra-curricular activities with the purpose on improving our understanding of important environmental problems and learning to live in more sustainable ways.
Some examples of recent activities include:
- Stephanie Lane volunteering at the Kakamega Environmental Education Project (through Earlham's Kenya Program), talking to church groups about why people should care about their environment.
- Coco Shea participating in the Semester in Environmental Science at Woods Hole Oceanographic Research Center, studying causes of anoxia in the Ipswich River.
- Nathan Cline interning with Heritage Environmental Services in Indianapolis, learning the details of management of hazardous industrial wastes.
- Students in Mic Jackson's Analysis of Environmental Problems class participating in the Indiana Governor's Conference on the Environment.
- Mic Jackson leading a Ford/Knight course on “Greening Earlham,” moving from the outcomes of environmental audits to determine specific actions we, as individuals and as a community, can take to move Earlham toward sustainability.
- Earlham Environmental Action Coalition members working with VP for Finance Dick Smith and Sudexho food service to establish a composting program for food wastes from the dining hall.
- Earlham Environmental Action Coalition members establishing an Environmental House, with a goal of raising the Earlham Community’s awareness of issues in environmental sustainability.
- Peace and Global Studies students’ fall 2003 seminar, focusing on global environmental and social concerns related to food and energy.
- Erin Harvey and Garrett Bucks carrying out an independent study course on Sustainable Agriculture under the guidance of Charlie Peck.
- Students and faculty working together to make Miller Farm a center for sustainable agriculture education and practice. Erin Harvey, Garrett Bucks and other students attended a collegiate sustainable agriculture conference. Work progresses on creating a student-led seminar that would help organize a local Community Sustainable Agriculture (CSA) program.
- Design and construction, using Earth-friendly architecture, of a greenhouse for Miller Farm and/or a new metals shop for the Art Department. Nathan Jones, with assistance from Dick Smith and many students who will assist in the construction.
Students majoring in Environmental Programs participate in Earlham's Environmental Colloquium series which brings to campus speakers and scholars from a wide range of disciplines, all of whom are passionately interested in the environment.
