Off Campus Study

Off-campus opportunities include:

  • Southwest Field Studies - Devoted to understanding the natural and human history of the desert region of North America.

  • Wilderness Program - Twenty-four days in August, open to all students but especially valuable for first-year students.

  • Kenya Program - Semester abroad in this culturally and ecologically diverse country, offering students the opportunity to study ecology and human culture in a variety of geographic contexts.

  • Border Studies - Semester on U.S.-Mexico international border, based in the metropolitan area of El Paso, Texas and Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua.

  • Oak Ridge Science Semester at Oak Ridge National Laboratories in Tennessee.

  • Semester in Environmental Science at Woods Hole Marine Biological Laboratory.

Internships

Recent internship experiences have included:
Students have worked in the Harvard Forest in Massachusetts; Heritage Environmental Services, gaining experience as hazardous materials handlers. Other students have volunteered locally at the Cope Environ-mental Center in Centerville, Indiana, (10 minutes from Earlham), and at Hayes Arboretum in Richmond.

Outcomes

Environmental Programs graduates go on to varied careers. Some serve as educators in schools or environmental learning centers, some as government investigators or regulators, some as researchers, some as members of NGOs (non-governmental organizations) working for a better environment. A recent biology major first found work at a zoo, then for the Nature Conservancy, and is now enrolled in a master's program focusing on the creation and restoration of natural areas. Another earned a Ph.D. and is now studying the ecology of the Great Barrier Reefs in Australia. One recent geology major is lobbying for environmental action. Others are pursuing advanced degrees and careers in soil ecology, law, environmental statistics, environmental chemistry, and climatology.
