"Heinavanker"

Heinavanker

Heinavanker (the Haywain) is an early music vocal ensemble from Tallinn, Estonia, on its first United States concert tour. Named for the famous altarpiece of Hieronymos Bosch (1453–1516), the ensemble has performed together since 1996 at such locations as Kloster Zinna Sommermusiken, Heilbronner Krichenmusiktage and Uckemärkische Musicwochen in Germany, the Sorø Internationale Musik Festival in Denmark, the Festival International de Musiques Sacrées Fribourg in Switzerland, the Rencontres Internationales de Musique Medievale du /Thoronet/ in France. Margo Kõlar, composer and artistic leader of the ensemble is the director of the department of electronics of music at the Music Academy of Estonia. Ensemble Heinavanker is performing as part of Earlham College's Invitational High School Festival. More

"Science, Technology and the Fourth Amendment"

Vahid Majidi

Presenter: Vahid Majidi, Assistant Director, FBI

Prior to his current assignment, Majidi served as the chemistry division leader at the Los Alamos National Laboratory. He also has served as chief science advisor to the Department of Justice where he was responsible for coordinating science and technology policy among the department's agencies and with state and local law enforcement entities. He was the lead department representative for biosecurity, pathogen forensics, select agents, DNA technologies and biometrics, and he interacted with the policy coordinating committees for the Homeland Security Council, National Security Council and White House Office of Science and Technology. In addition to a long history of service to the Society for Applied Spectroscopy, he has served on a number of editorial boards and is currently on the Board of Directors of the International Forensic Research Institute. Blues Traveler

Formed in Princeton, New Jersey, in 1983, this blues-rock band creates music filled with incredible emotion and raw power. Blues Traveler, one of the few kingpins of the jam scene, backs up its grooves with carefully crafted songs and stories that are both witty and catchy. After eight albums, six gold or platinum plaques and sales of over 10 million discs, their latest album Bastardos! with Vanguard Records centers around songs about falling in and out of love and what can happen before and after heartbreak. The resulting album highlights the versatility and emotion of this group with music on keyboard, harmonica blasts, percussion, horns, guitar, bass and vocals. "The End of Environmentalism and the
Birth of a New American Politics"

Michael Shellenberger

Presenter: Michael Shellenberger '93, co-director, Breakthrough Institute; Co-Founder, American Environics; Apollo Alliance and author

Shellenberger calls for the end of environmentalism and describes the birth of a politics capable of dealing with ecological and other human crises, from global warming to the destruction of the Amazon. Along with Ted Nordhaus, Shellenberger co-authored the book The Death of Environmentalism and The Birth of a New Aspirational Politics as well as an essay by the same name, which created a major national debate over the future of environmentalism and progressive politics. Shellenberger has written articles on issues ranging from the New Apollo Project to ethical trade for the L.A. Times, the American Prospect and the Philadelphia Inquirer. He is also the author of Race to the Top, a report on NGO ethical business campaigns. More
