Presenter: Dinaw Mengestu, author and Tulane University Visiting
Writer in Residence
Mengestu left Ethiopia when he was two years old and was
raised in the suburbs of Chicago, Illinois. He received his B.A.
in English from Georgetown University, and his M.F.A. in fiction
from Columbia University. Mengestu has written for a variety of
publications such as Rolling Stone and Harper. His
debut novel The
Beautiful Things that Heaven Bears won the 2007 Guardian First
Book Award and The New
York Times Notable Book Award, as well as being chosen as one of
the 10-best novels of 2007 by Amazon.com. Mengestu is the recipient
of such awards as the Lannan Fiction Fellowship, the National Book
Foundation's "5
under 35 Award," the
Prix du Meilleur Premier Roman Etranger in France, and a 2006 Fellowship
in Fiction from the New York Foundation for the Arts. His lecture
presentation is part of the annual Charles Lecture Series on ethics.
