Earlham offers a challenging intellectual environment that attracts
a diverse group of students with a variety of motivations — academic,
political, social, athletic, ethical, career-minded — who
want to make an impact on the world.
Internationalization is woven into the fabric of Earlham.
With a tenth of the student body representing 67 countries, our
students interact daily with individuals from very different perspectives
than their own. In addition to the presence of diverse students
and faculty, the College's broad internationalization is built
on language learning for all students, an internationalized curriculum and
engaged off-campus study.
The values and interests of a large number of Earlham
first-year students are reflected in the results of the Cooperative
Institutional Research Programs (CIRP) survey of new students.
A large number of those responding in 2007 identified "helping
others in difficulty" (76 percent) and "improving understanding
of other cultures and countries" (75 percent) as very important
or essential life goals. Earlham CIRP respondents most often
indicated interest in majoring in arts and humanities, social
sciences and biological science.
Alumni
Earlham alumni report that the College has prepared
them well for post-baccalaureate education and life in general.
Overall Earlham alumni also believe the College greatly enhanced
their understanding of societal and moral problems, and their ability
to relate well to people of different cultures and races.
The College ranks 23rd among 1,469 colleges
and universities
nationwide in the percentage of students who go on to earn Ph.D.s.
Earlham ranks 8th in Ph.D. production in Life and Biological
Sciences, 11th in Earth Sciences and Geosciences, 12th in the
Biological Sciences and 18th in Sociology. (Source: Weighted
Baccalaureate Origins Study for 1975-2004, Higher Education Data
Sharing Consortium).
Earlham graduates' success also is reflected in their selection for many
highly competitive fellowships and scholarships for post-graduate study. These
include Carnegie Endowment, Fulbright, Mellon, Watson and National Science
Foundation fellowships, as well as Goldwater and Truman scholarships. |
