About the Department

Special Features

Earlham's on-campus and international study programs give you first-hand experiences with German language, culture and world views. Students studying German Language and Literature supplement and expand their studies by participating in these on-campus opportunities:

  • Students may collaborate with faculty on research projects, commonly known as Ford-Knight Projects. These have included collaborative research on German Jewish writers after 1945 and German women writers.
  • Students studying German Language and Literature can live together in German House, where they organize events for the entire community. Each year a native speaker from Vienna, Austria, llives in German House and works closely with students in and out of class.
  • Each year guest speakers and artists from Germany and Austria visit campus. Recent guests include film scriptwriter Fatima el-Tayeb and writer/activist Ika Hügel-Marshall.
  • German Majors and minors regularly receive prestigious national awards, enabling them to work and study abroad.

Earlham's international programs take full advantage of their locations. Whether you are participating in a May Term course which features study and travel in Germany or in a semester-long program, you'll gain understandings that will expand your world view. These insights are critical preparation for living and working in a global society.

As a part of Earlham's semester-long Germany/Austria Program, Earlham students

  • live with families in Germany and Austria
  • visit several cities in eastern Germany including Jena, Dresden, Leipzig, Erfurt and Eisenach
  • spend two months in Marburg and Berlin, studying German language and culture with students from around the world
  • take courses in Art History, Austrian Literature, and Austrian and European Politics in Vienna and complete an ethnographic project
  • meet with representatives of various political, religious, and cultural interest groups;
