Master of Arts in Teaching
Awakening the Teacher Within

Admissions

Academic Preparation

Students with undergraduate degrees in English, mathematics, sciences, modern foreign languages, and the social sciences are eligible. At right, Professor of History and former M.A.T. program director Randall Shrock (second from left) speaks with three members of the 2004 cohort.

Applicants with undergraduate degrees in interdisciplinary programs such as women's or African American studies or related programs such as engineering may also qualify. Before you decide to apply for the program, you may send a copy of your transcript(s) to the M.A.T. Office for review to determine if you are generally eligible. In addition, applicants who are career changers are encouraged to consider the program.

Qualifications for Admission

Program officers review each candidate in light of the entire application. Qualification for admission is assessed through evaluation of written essays, interviews, grade point average (at least 3.0 in major or overall course work), standardized test scores (Praxis I and G.R.E.) letters of recommendation, and a transcript review to assess the general breadth of student preparation.

Your commitment to the cohort and the program's principles and your dispositions for teaching are evaluated mainly through analyses of the application essay, letters of recommendation, and especially a required interview on the Earlham campus. The interview is scheduled following the review of your completed written application. We also seek candidates who have had positive experiences in working with youth as one additional means of confirming their desire and capacity to become a teacher.

GRE and Praxis I tests

The GRE and Praxis exams are both tests of the Educational Testing Service (ETS). The easiest way to locate registration information, as well as find preparation materials, is to visit the ETS web site at www.ets.org. Individual test administrations can be completed on computer at designated test sites across the nation.

If you still have an original copy of your GRE test scores, and your test was taken within the last five years, you are not required to re-take the GRE for application to the Earlham M.A.T. Program. If you took the test more than five years ago, please contact the M.A.T. Admissions Office for consultation on whether your test is recent enough to be permissible for the M.A.T. application process.

Transcript Assistance

Prospective students are welcome to send unofficial copies of their transcripts for a recommendation of what area they may be most readily certified. This service is particularly helpful for those prospective students who hold undergraduate degrees in interdisciplinary studies, liberal arts, women's studies, African-American studies, engineering, etc.

Schedule a Campus Visit

Interested students are encouraged to visit the Earlham College campus and observe an M.A.T. class. A visitation day and time can be scheduled through the M.A.T. Office toll-free number at 1-877-983-1847 or locally at 765/983-1847.
