We are all teachers and students at various points in our lives; what we do in these experiences strongly influences who we are, as well as who we will become. The reciprocal nature of the field of education proves that students and teachers are equally valuable to the process of learning. The Earlham M.A.T. Program allows its cohort to blur the line between the two, allowing us to be teachers and students simultaneously. In doing this, I realize why teaching is so important. It is an opportunity to close gaps, forge paths and build a bridge to tomorrow. Teaching is a very important factor of the butterfly effect that will make the world a better place than it is right now.
The Earlham M.A.T. Program provides a web of support for its cohort of candidates, creating a group of colleagues capable of discussing issues that may arise in and out of the classroom. The role of professors and mentor teachers as "critical friends" also creates resources that make student teaching a triumph, rather than a test of will. When the program has ended for us and we go our separate ways, all of us will leave with more than a degree — we will have an extended family to help us become what the world needs more than anything: great teachers.

The M.A.T. Program's emphasis on practical experience was perfect for me. Having an instructor who was a public school teacher and principal for almost 20 years to guide me through the ups and downs of the school year was invaluable. We knew she understood exactly what we were feeling, and she always had great, practical advice and suggestions. This kind of practical preparation really set me apart from other new teachers I'm working with. When I started my first full-time teaching job, I felt like I was returning to the classroom after a summer break — not starting over in a new job.

When I began my search for a teaching program suitable to me as a non-traditional graduate student, I sought a program that would offer certification quickly. From my first inquiring call to the Earlham M.A.T. Office, I've found this experience to surpass my expectations. I've found a program that challenges me, stimulates me, and validates my life experience as I awaken the teacher within.
As a bonus, I've formed lifelong bonds with members of this cohort — teachers awakening from all walks of life — friends with whom I anticipate many years of dialogue as we offer the best of what we are and the best of what we've learned to the education of our collective future.
