Master of Arts in Teaching
Awakening the Teacher Within

Program Overview

How this Program Works

The M.A.T. Program is full-time only, but it prepares you for licensure in three semesters, totaling 11 months. You proceed through this professional course of study in a cohort of approximately 18-24 students.

The cohort model provides you with an opportunity to work closely with other students and to begin the important role of building a culture of support for teaching. This emphasis on cooperation is designed to help sustain and support you as a teacher. Indeed, the final course for the M.A.T. Program occurs during your first semester of teaching and is designed to help you make a more successful transition to full-time teaching. The final course can be conducted by distance learning if necessary.

Commuting to Earlham:
Which days of the week do classes meet?

During the summer semester, classes meet Monday through Friday, on the Earlham campus. In the fall, you participate in a practicum in a local school system in the morning, and attend afternoon classes at Earlham. Spring semester focuses on your student teaching, which takes place in the same school system where you completed your practicum. Occasional visits to the Earlham campus are required in the spring semester.

Student-teaching Placement

The M.A.T. program places students in area schools.
