PART-TIME
FACULTY POSITIONS
Earlham has two types of part-time positions, regular
and adjunct. They differ in responsibilities, compensation levels,
benefits eligibility, and eligibility for continuing contracts and
tenure.
Regular Part-time Faculty
These faculty include administrators who work 3/4 time
or more, and teaching faculty whose total workload equals 3/4 time
or more (even if their teaching load alone is only 1/2 time or
more). Such
faculty are defined by Earlham as full-time for benefits purposes.
Regular part-time faculty are assigned their fractional
share of full time faculty responsibilities as outlined in this handbook.
Regular part-time teaching faculty will be eligible
for contract renewal, and for consideration for tenure (for their
appropriate fractional portion of a full time position) no later than
their tenth year at Earlham and no earlier than their 6th.
Adjunct Teaching Faculty
Adjunct faculty are those who work less than 3/4 time.
They are compensated on a per-course rate and, depending on their
individual arrangement with the College, may assume some additional
departmental and advising responsibilities. They are not expected,
however, to assume a full fractional share of wider College responsibilities.
They may serve on committees and participate in faculty meetings
but these are not required. Adjuncts are not eligible for benefits
provided
for full time faculty, and are not eligible for consideration for
tenure.
Earlham has two types of adjunct faculty positions,
continuing and temporary. They differ in that continuing adjuncts
occupy ongoing funded positions, and are therefore eligible for annual
renewal of contracts, pending satisfactory performance reviews. Temporary
adjuncts are employed because of a particular need in a given year,
but which may not be a continuing need in future years. Unless new
arrangements have been made, temporary adjunct contracts will expire
and not be renewable at the end of their specified term.
Part-time Administrative Faculty
Part-time administrative faculty are considered parallel
to adjunct teaching faculty although they are of course not compensated
by reference to courses. All other provisions apply.
Combinations of Adjunct Positions
Positions other than regular part-time, added together,
do not constitute full time employment for benefits purposes. If a
part time faculty member accepts another part time position at the
College, benefits are provided only if one or the other of the positions
is already full time for benefits purposes.
The purpose of this policy is to allow current part-time
faculty members to compete fairly for positions which may have a compensation
limit. It is meant also to protect budget centers that employ part-time
faculty from having their expenses rise due to factors over which
they have no control. |
