Academics are an integral part of life at Earlham. However, due to limited space in the Student Handbook, we direct you to the Curriculum Guide as the complete academic resource. The online version of the Curriculum Guide is updated continually.
All students are assigned an academic adviser who assists in planning a course of study toward degree completion at Earlham. While academic advisers work with students in this manner, each student is responsible for meeting all of the College's graduation requirements. Once a student is ready to declare a major, he or she should arrange to have an academic adviser within that program or department and complete a form for changing academic advisers, available from the Registrar's Office. Students and advisers receive an Academic Audit at the beginning of each academic year, outlining outstanding General Education and credit requirements toward the Earlham degree.
The advising relationship is highly valued, engaging both faculty and students enthusiastically. Most advisers create occasions to see their students beyond the classroom — over meals, during athletic competitions or at arts presentations. The advising relationship often leads to research partnerships, study abroad, independent study or teaching assistantships.
Advising at Earlham is grounded in trust, fun and commitment toward degree completion. Students are expected to be full participants in this relationship. In fact, many alumni note that their professors/advisers have become lifelong friends and mentors.
