Program Description
This program is designed to give students in-depth contact with the German-speaking
world. Its emphasis is language acquisition, cross-cultural competence
and an understanding of historical and contemporary Mitteleuropa. The
program is divided into two parts, the first of which takes place in
Germany, in the cities of Marburg and Berlin. This part of the program
runs from approximately August 26 to October 22. The second part is
in Vienna, Austria and lasts from approximately October 31 to December
15.
Location: Germany

Marburg: The program begins in this charming city, home to a bustling university since 1527. Half-timbered houses and winding cobblestone streets make Marburg a picturesque, ideal place to start a stay in Germany. Students spend approximately four weeks studying at a language institute that offers intensice instruction to learners from all over the world. In addition to classroom instruction, students have the opportunity to explore the history and culture of Marburg through a series of activities and excursions.
Berlin: Dozens of world-class museums, three opera houses, abundant cultural eclecticism and the new relocation of the German federal government from Bonn make Berlin one of the most vibrant and stimulating places in Europe. Divided by the Cold War until 1989, Berlin offers students a telescopic view of the opportunities and challenges brought to Germany by unification. While in Berlin students will study for approximately four weeks at a language institute, and will be able to take advantage of the very rich cultural offerings of the city as well as interact personally with representatives from many social and political gropus.

Vienna, the captial of Austria, exists as a geographical and cultural gateway between Eastern and Central, historical and contemporary Europe. Home over the centuries to the likes of Haydn, Freud, Beethoven and Gustav Klimt, as well as the former heart of the Austro-Hungarian empire, Vienna provides a living glimpse into the layers of European cultural and political evolution. While in Vienna, students will do coursework at the Universität Wien that will take advantage of the rich offerings of the city.
