Courses and Academic Information
Japan: SICE takes place during the fall semester. Students earn a total of 18 semester credits for the successful completion of the program. The following courses will be offered:

Orientation
Students accepted to participate in the program are required to take part in scheduled orientation sessions during the spring semester, prior to departure. Orientation is designed to prepare the student for the cross-cultural experience and will include practical information on passports, visas, and living with a host family, as well as, readings, lectures, and discussions with former participants of the program. Students will receive one semester credit (ID24) for successful completion of the orientation program.
Coursework: Japan
Japanese Language (6 hrs.)
Second and third year language courses are offered. Depending on demand, advanced courses may also be arranged. Language classes focus on improving overall language comprehension and ability to communicate successfully with host families, teachers, students, and other residents of Morioka.
Field Study in Education (6 hrs.)
Three days a week, students serve as an English teaching assistant in a local school. Through this experience, students explore an important range of social and cultural issues in Japanese society, while developing personal and professional relationships with students and teachers.
Cross-Cultural Educational Perspectives (3 hrs.)
Through readings dealing with education and socialization in Japan, this course helps students process their day-to-day experiences of living and working in Japan, leading to a deeper understanding of Japanese society and people.
Special Faculty Seminar (3 hrs.)
This seminar is based on the faculty leader's area of expertise with an emphasis on issues related to Japan.

In addition to these courses, students are required to participate in a variety of group activities, including concerts, festivals, and trips to historic sites. Participants are responsible for negotiating credits with their academic advisor before departure.
