September 1
First week (August 24 -31, 2008)
A photo of the Cuautla sign at the train station.

Our program began on August 24 when the group of 13 students arrived at the airport in Mexico City.  That same afternoon, the group boarded a bus that took us to Cuautla, the program site.  That is, except for two students whose flights came in late and had to spend the night in Mexico City, but all turned out just fine.  They arrived the next day, tired, but ready to start the program.

A photo of the fall 2008 Mexico students gathering at Casa Sol for orientation. Students went home with their new families the very first night and returned to Casa Sol, our Academic Center, the next morning to start the on-site orientation. We met with Jacqui Guillermoprieto, the on-site Coordinator, to review the Handbook, and later took a trip around Cuautla to locate ourselves in the city.  We visited Tetelcingo, a NahuA photo with group members and Jaqui during the walking tour of Cuautla.atl speaking pueblo nearby, the Central de Abastos (a large food and suppliesdistribution center for the region), and the New Market, the largest open market in town, among other places.  The following day, we broke up into three groups and went on a walking tour in the center of Cuautla.  We also learned how to ride the local public transportation called combis.

Group members taking classes with Goyo. Classes started on Wednesday.  During the first part of the program we will have classes in the mornings from 9:00 to 1:15 and two afternoons per week.  Each student will also have an individual field study project, and during the first part of the program, each student will spend approximately five hours per week at the field study site.  In the second half of the program the field study will be ten to twelve hours a week.  Students will be meeting with their field study supervisors starting the first week of September.

A photo of Brian, Sidy, and Carmelita preparing dinner. The first week we also had or first dinner with Carmelita, the cooking instructor.  Brian, Sidy and Marisa were the student cooks and created a marvelous dinner for the whole group.  We are all looking forward to many more of these dinners.

Next Saturday we will have our first excursion to the pueblos of Hueyapan and Zacualpan.

It’s a great group and we have enjoyed our first week together!!
