Cooking with Carmelita.Last Friday night we had an excellent meal prepared by cooking instructor Carmelita and Megan, Britney and Isana.  The menu consisted of gorditas, enchiladas and rice pudding. We always have a meat option and a vegetarian option of each dish.  It was a wonderful, relaxing way to end the week.

A display of fireworks and flags for Mexican Independence Day.This week was the celebration of Mexico’s indepenedence from Spain in 1810. On the eve of Sept. 15, a priest named named Miguel Hidalgo rang the church bells in the small villageA young boy and girl dressed in traditional clothes to celebrate Independnce Day. of Dolores and declared war on the Spanish government.  The next day, Sept. 16, the revolutionary army under the leadership of Hidalgo began what became the fight for Mexico’s national independence.  Today, Miguel Midalgo is recognized as the national hero and Sept. 16 is Mexico’s official national holiday.  In Cuautla this year, the holiday was celebrated with fireworks, displays, and family parties.

More celebrating!

Students from UNILA converse with Earlham students. For the second time, we have welcomed students from UNILA, the Latin American University in Cuautla, who come to Casa Sol and engage in conversations with our group.  Everyone enjoys this time together, and everyone looks forward to our conversations next week.

More conversations with the local university students.

A photo of Mago.

And, for those of us who enjoy aerobics class, we are happy to introduce you to our teacher, Mago (and Britney’s host mother).

This weekend we will visit Mexico City and we are all looking forward to this trip.  We will send pictures next week of our experiences there.
