Program Description

South India and Sri Lanka are the program sites for the Fall 2005 South Asia program. The program is designed to immerse the student in a number of different academic, cultural, and social experiences. These experiences will take the form of course work, lectures, travel, homestays, internships, meetings with authors, cooking classes, learning music, dance, yoga and much more.

Location

The program’s base in South India will be Chennai (formerly and more commonly known as Madras) located near the 13th north parallel and 80 degree longitude. Chennai is a sprawling city of about 6.4 million people . The program will also visit relatively smaller Bangalore (population of ONLY 5.6 million). In addition the group will make a number of short (two to three day) trips to a number of cultural, historical, and educational sites based on the curriculum. Also, if educationally appropriate and logistically feasible, students will be placed in suitable internships outside Chennai.

In Sri Lanka the program will be based in the over seven hundred year old cultural capital of Sri Lanka-Kandy- the site of the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic or the Dalada Maligawa. The program will also visit a number of important places in Sri Lanka.
