art class, Photography, Introduction to Non-Western Music, and Applied Piano. She also participated in Orchestra, Flue Ensemble, Gospel Revelations Choir, and Dance Alloy. Her best memories of the year were traveling around the United States, cooking Japanese food, and hanging out with people. She liked the people at Earlham very much. She also liked that students and teachers work closely together. She only wishes there was a place to shop on campus! She recommends TSA students bring Japanese salad dressing and Japanese food. She also recommends you bring your hobby and anything Japanese to introduce to people at Earlham. “You are a Japanese Ambassador to Earlham! Introduce Japanese Culture!”
Machiko Fukase was a third year Economic Geography major. While at Earlham she participated in Gospel Revelations and Ultimate Frisbee.
Her best memories of the academic year included talking to friends, the International Festival, and the Ultimate Frisbee tournament. She recommends that future TSA students go to the dining hall and talk to people and, “don’t stay in your room all the time!” During breaks she traveled to Chicago, New York, Boston, Pennsylvania, Las Vegas, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Washington D.C.
Tetsuya Koide was a third year student from the Politics and Economics school. Although he said he majored in “Tetsuyaism,”he took classes in Rock Climbing, Photography, and International Relations at Earlham. His favorite things about the TSA program were the TSA faculty, close friends and everyone’s openness. His best memories of the
year are just typical days, hanging out with friends and going to the grocery store together. He says he basically loves Earlham. Tetsuya says, “In the fall semester, I could not understand what people talked about. However, I can understand now. I’m amazed by myself. I really appreciate my friends and teachers.” His advice to future TSA students “Try whatever you want to do with Joy!”
Chika Maekawa was a second year Commerce major who took Introduction to Non-Western Music and Introduction to Macroeconomics in addition to TSA courses. She also participated in Gospel Revelations and
Dance Alloy. Her best memory of the year was International Festival. Three things she enjoyed best about the TSA program were service learning, eating Japanese food, and group activities like making Jack-o-Lanterns at Halloween. During breaks, Chika traveled to New York, Boston, Indianapolis, and Chicago. Her advice to TSA students, “HAVE FUN!”
Shota Matsui, a third year International (Developing) Economy major, took classes in
Managerial Finance and Financial and Managerial Accounting. He really liked the advisors and teachers. He thought the class for TSA students was great and he liked meeting many friends who were interested in Japan. His biggest challenge was living far from an urban area, but during breaks he was able to travel to Canada, to both the West and East Coast of the United States, and to seven countries in South America. His best memory of the year was getting excellent reactions from Earlham students after cooking sushi for them! He recommends TSA students practice English before arriving and bring Japanese goods such as calligraphy and traditional clothes.
Kaeko Matsumoto was a third year literature major who took Basic French, Women and Literature, and Horseback riding Lessons. Kaeko liked the TSA program becau
se of the good people and good environment. She also enjoyed the small group. Her biggest challenge was studying a lot, but she was happy with her overall experience at Earlham College. She would recommend that TSA students practice English before coming so that they can have more free time. During her breaks, Kaeko traveled to the southern United States.
Kosuke Ohara was a third year Business Major. In addition to TSA classes, he took an education course entitled Foundations of Education. Kosuke thought the academic advisors and American students at Earlham were
very kind and easy to talk to. He encourages TSA students to take advantage of their free time by participating in campus activities. This past year Kosuke participated in many activities like soccer, dance, Ultimate Frisbee, Gospel Revs, International Festival and Harumatsuri. His best memory of the year was Dance Alloy, which is a dance show organized each semester by students. Kosuke used his time during breaks to travel to New York City and West Virginia.
Masaki Watanabe, a third year Environmental Economics major, took Human Resource Management, Politics of the Third World, and the Friends Colloquium in addition to TSA classes. Although class discussions were his biggest challenge, he
liked them because they were a good opportunity to exchange students’ opinions. The three things Masaki liked best about the TSA program were the volunteer work, small class size, and conversation projects. Masaki helped organize a benefit concert to raise donations for Jena 6. He encourages future TSA students to be outgoing, talk to many American students, and study hard. He says, “It’s up to you whether you enjoy Earlham life and gain English proficiency.”
