(SILS) at Waseda University. Her best memories of the year are the goodinternational friends she made, shopping and hanging out. Mayu Sato is a 3rd year Global Political Economics major at Waseda. During her time at Earlham she has been in the Gospel Revelations, done indoor gym climbing, gone back-packing and horse riding. Mayu’s best memories have been the volunteer work and the visit to Ali’s house. She recommends you not too eat too much and to exercise enough.
Junichi Koseki is a 2nd year English major in SILS. His favorite things about the Earlham TSA program are the foci on global issues and writing. Junichi thinks it is easy to fall back and speak Japanese at Earlham and his recommendation is to try and not only be with Japanese students, but to mingle with other people as well!
Tomoki Fujita is a super senior, studying Philosophy, Religion and Literature in SILS. His best memory is the trip he made to Indianapolis with his hall mates. He is however, not so happy about the cold winter or sharing his room with someone. At Earlham, Tomoki sings in the concert choir and is a member of Earlham College Model United Nations. His recommendations for you are to learn more English skills and to bring Japanese stuff with you to give to friends or to have when you miss Japanese food.
Kazuki Yanase is a 2nd year student at SILS. He likes the close relationships between teachers and students and the events that take place on campus every day. His biggest challenge has been using his English. He really enjoyed having dinner at his academic advisor’s house at the beginning of the semester.
Megumu Takagi is a 2nd year student at SILS. His favorite aspects of the TSA program include learning about the culture, tradition and politics of the US, building a firm foundation of his English ability and not cooking! His biggest challenge is trying to understand his roommate, who speaks English very quickly. Megumu plays on an intramural soccer team in his free time and suggests that if you want to get credit in specific subjects (such as politics, economy) during the first semester, you need to have high English skills.
Atsushi Nihei is a 3rd year Economics student. He likes Jane, the TSA program director and Ali, program associate and the cookies in the dining hall. However, he misses the baths in Japan. He plays Ultimate Frisbee and sings in the Gospel Revelations Choir (southern gospel music). He suggests that you study English very hard before Earlham!
Chiaki Sato is a 2nd year SILS student who has really enjoyed making friends from many different countries. She takes piano lessons, is in the hand drum class and plays basketball. Chiaki suggests that you bring warm clothes for the winter and that you pack some Japanese salad dressing!
Asuka Nagayama is a 3rd year Finance major in the School of Commerce. While practicing for the 4 performances that she will do in Dance Alloy has been a challenge, she still is able to take horseback riding lessons, sing in the Gospel Revelations Choir, participate in the hand drum class and learn how to develop her own pictures! She has enjoyed volunteering at Girls Inc, an afterschool program for girls, as part of her Global Issues class.
Yukie Tomiyasu is a 2nd year SILS student. She wants you to know that is easy to make friends at Earlham because there are many people on campus who are interested in Japan. She likes the fact that it is a small campus, so everything is close to the dorms and it is easy to get to know people. Her biggest challenge so far has been making presentations to 5th graders (about 10 years old) for her Global Issues class. Yukie has also joined the Japanese Club at the local high school.
Momoko Mitsuhashi is a 2nd year Social Science student. She plays the hand drum, is taking piano lessons and is learning how to ride a horse. When we asked her what her favorite memory is, she replied “usual days” so she must be pretty happy here! Momoko suggests that you do not pack too much luggage for your stay at Earlham.
