Facilities Planning

Assessment

The College stresses the importance of assessment as a mechanism for improvement.

The administrative mechanism for doing this is the annual Unit Plan. The Unit Plan has evolved in format and timing over the years at the request of senior administration. For 2008-09 the Plan was completed in June 2008 and reviewed the previous year, largely with quantative data, and then presented as a plan for the year. Earlier Unit Plans, 2002-03, 2004-05, 2005-06, and 2007-08 were generally completed later in the summer and were more of a projection of future plans. Although there was some reporting of the previous year's accomplishments, it was always in narrative form rather than quantative data.

From time to time surveys of performance are done.  Two recent surveys were completed and reports are available.  They include the LibQual survey of library performance and the MISO Survey which comprehensively surveys user satisfaction for Information Services.

  • LibQual Survey was conducted in the spring of 2005 and provides user perspectives on the libraries’ collections, services and facilities. The LibQual Survey instrument is a widely used instrument that has been in existence for about eight years.  While initiated by the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) it is now widely used in all types of academic libraries.
  • MISO Survey is a survey developed beginning in 2004 by Bryn Mawr College and partners.  MISO stands for Merged Information Services Organizations and is designed for undergraduate colleges and universities that have so called merged library and computing units. The survey was conducted at Earlham in spring 2006 and 2009. Results are available. <http://www.earlham.edu/~libr/content/about/MISO_reports.html>

The library has conducted more, in depth, assessnent which can be found on the libraries' Mission, Goals and Assesment site.
