Around The Heart

Mission

Around The Heart (ATH) has three forms: (1) a blog that is updated daily at the Web site, (2) Around The Heart Daily, an e-mailed compilation of information and events and (3) a printable pdf document representing a compilation of the week's items from Around The Heart Daily (ATHD) and the blog. Around The Heart, in all forms, aims to keep students and the campus community up to date about information important to our experience of life in community at Earlham. ATH is Earlham's "newsletter of record," chronicling the happenings and issues of the academic year.

Content

Messages are presented in several subsections with the publication.

These subsections are included in ATH Daily and Weekly:

  • Campus Events
  • Off-Campus Events
  • Notices and announcements from campus offices about calendar, deadlines, employment, policies, hours, procedures
  • Kudos, accomplishments (e.g., awards and recognitions), activities (e.g., meeting attendance, publications), and thank yous of/to faculty, staff, students, groups and institution in general
  • Governance agenda items or brief reports from campus governance committees

In addition to the items shown above, the following subsections are published only in ATH Weekly:

  • Opportunities for Service — opportunities for tutoring, helping local agencies, volunteering and various outreach projects
  • Opportunities for Student Employment — on-campus and off-campus jobs
  • Opportunities for Student Funding — scholarships and grants for which students may apply
  • Items of Interest — Personal items for sale, lost and found, rides needed and offered, roommates/housing needed or available

Distribution

ATH is readily available and updated daily at the Web during the academic year (www.earlham.edu/aroundtheheart/). Every weekday, except Tuesday, a Public Affairs staff member e-mails ATH Daily to the faculty, staff, student, ESR and Bethany listservs, and to selected Board of Trustees members and selected retired faculty and community members. On Tuesdays, copies in print form are placed in the dining hall and at various offices around campus. A link to the printable pdf version is shared via e-mail when the new Tuesday issue is available through those same e-mail lists.

Students are required to receive the notice about new ATH issues on Tuesday, but may opt not to receive the ATH Daily e-mailed version.

Submissions

Earlham's ATH is entirely based on submissions from members of the campus. Individuals sponsoring events on campus are encouraged to use ATHD, rather than the Earlham Faculty Listserv, for announcing events; each event may be announced twice. Copy is formatted in a standard way. ATH submissions should be sent using the online form found at http://www.earlham.edu/aroundtheheart/submissions/. Submissions received by 11 a.m. each day are included in the next morning's ATHD. The deadline for an item to appear in the Tuesday weekly publication is Monday at 11 a.m.
