Evaluating
I.S. @ Earlham
Introduction
Knowing how to access and use information technology
is an important part of an education. Students entering college
need to be well-equipped to handle the abundance of information
that will be presented to them. For this reason, Information technology
has become an increasingly important part of the curriculum and
the
community
at Earlham. The tools and technology we provide our students enables
them to accomplish learning objectives, to satisfy personal interests
and expand ways of knowing. Technology lets students get the most
from their experiences here on campus and in studies abroad.
Since 2000, the College has improved
and advanced our technical infrastructure, support mechanisms,
and computing facilities. The
College network, for instance, has increased speed 10-fold while
adding new, easy-to-use online registration methods, additional “public” network
ports across campus, and — most importantly — wireless
access in all academic buildings and most off-campus houses. Further
infrastructure improvements have doubled the number of servers
in our array, installed additional UPS and back-up capabilities,
and increased storage capacity to over one terabyte. Storage capacity
has increased 20 times the previous capacity, up from roughly 60
gigabytes just two years ago, the average size of a hard drive
in a mid-line computer today.
Support has been improved through the implementation
and staffing of a central computing HelpDesk that Earlham community
members
may contact via Web
form, phone or e-mail to report problems or
request assistance. The HelpDesk also has a Web site <http://helpdesk.earlham.edu/> which
houses forms, contact
information, policies, tutorials, computer
lab information and a number of other resources. Additionally,
Earlham has updated, replaced, or newly installed over 300 computers
in the past three years, almost half of which have gone into public
computing lab facilities for student use.
This Evaluation of Information Services is designed to help you
understand some of the ways that computing and information resources
are used at Earlham. It is based on a series of questions developed
by Educause to assist prospective students in making informed decisions
as they choose a college.
If you have questions, comments or concerns about this information,
please contact the HelpDesk at helpdesk@earlham.edu.
