Evaluating I.S. @ Earlham

Academic Experience

Are technology resources available, used effectively to enhance the learning experience, and designed to prepare graduates in your major for successful technology use in their careers?

A variety of technology resources are available to Earlham students and faculty. How they are used in the teaching/learning process varies from instructor to instructor. Central to Earlham’s approach to incorporating technology into the curriculum is our belief that a well-educated student needs to be well equipped to handle an abundance of information, both analytically and technically. Students in the Natural Sciences are well prepared to apply a variety of technology-based tools within their chosen discipline. Students in many of the Social Sciences and arts are also exposed to a wide variety of technologies (both hardware and software). Students in the Humanities and Fine Arts develop sophisticated research skills, working with Lilly Library staff to conduct research using electronic full text journals, books, reference sources, indexes and Web resources.

What library resources are available online (catalog, databases, special collections)?

    The library catalog

    Approximately 50 databases

And items from the Friends Collection and College Archives that reflect Earlham’s unique materials related to the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), including:

      American Friend Obituary Index

      Josiah Parker Papers digital exhibit

Search aids for our manuscript collections as well as the Indiana Yearly Meeting Archives and the Western Yearly Meeting archive

What electronic reference materials are licensed and how accessible are they from outside the library (for example, in the residence halls or off-campus)?

All of Earlham’s licensed electronic reference materials are available from any computer on campus including all of the residence halls and to any authorized member of the Earlham community off-campus via our proxy server. These include: Encyclopedia Britannica, Oxford English Dictionary, Oxford Reference Online, Grove Dictionary of Art, The Year’s Work in English Studies, The Year’s Work in Critical and Cultural Theory, Biography Resource Center, Literature Resource Center and many databases.

How does the campus help students develop computer skills?

During New Student Week, Earlham provides numerous library instruction sessions; an IT orientation session required of all first-year students. Librarians in both Lilly and the Wildman Science libraries are available to assist students with electronic research resources.

What percentage of faculty has a networked computer available to them?

Many faculty at Earlham are provided with their own personal laptop or desktop Mac or Windows computer that is configured to work on both the ethernet and wireless networks. All faculty have access to a networked computer in one of our six public computer labs, oneof which remains open 24 hours.

What percentage of faculty use e-mail regularly?

95% or more of our faculty regularly use their College e-mail account for business or personal use.
