Study Abroad in Japan

Earlham offers two distinct programs for study abroad in Japan, both of which include home stays and many opportunities for students to broaden their interest in and knowledge of Japan and the Japanese language.

  • The Japan Study program is based at Waseda University in Tokyo, in the School of International Liberal Studies. The experience can be for one semester or yearlong.
  • The one-semester Studies in Cross Cultural Education (SICE) program is based in Morioka, and places students in junior high schools as assistant English teachers. Students also take university classes.

Many colleges offer study abroad programs in Japan, but increasingly schools are turning to third-party providers for their study abroad options. Earlham's programs in Japan, however, continue to be managed by Earlham faculty and staff.

Joce -2012-febIn February 2012, Japan Study and the Bonner Center for Service and Vocation held a two-part workshop: Marketing Your Japan Off-Campus Experience. Part one was a 90-minute session  focusing on interview skills specifically for those seniors who had interviews with the JET Program. Part two was a three-hour workshop focusing on transferable skills, resumes and cover letters. The primary goal of this workshop series was to teach students who had studied abroad on the SICE or Japan Study programs how to effectively communicate their experiences abroad and their skills to potential employers via their resume, cover letter, or interview.
