Earlham College invites applications for the full-time, 12-month administrative
faculty position of Director of Human Resources.
Responsibilities
The Director of Human Resources manages the human resources function,
payroll and benefits administration for Earlham College and Earlham
School of Religion employees (numbering approximately 350). The Director
will also provide: hiring processes for non-teaching vacancies, guidance
for employee relations concerns, and supervisor training and development.
This position reports to the Vice President for Financial Affairs,
works with the Provost, and is supported by the Payroll Clerk and the
Business Office Administrative Assistant.
Primary Duties

Compensation Administration
- Benefits administration: implement monthly benefits
education programs; coordinate communication with payroll; assist
with enrollment and termination processes; serve as primary contact
for employees and vendors/benefits providers regarding benefit
programs, including worker's compensation and tuition benefit
programs; maintain compliance with federal and state employment
laws including HIPAA; maintain applicable data entry and reporting
processes.
- Payroll administration: supervise Payroll Clerk; maintain compliance
with federal and state employment laws; initiate pay orders for
newly hired hourly staff employees; coordinate payroll processes
for salaried employees in consultation with Vice President for
Finance and the Academic Dean.
- Manage annual wage adjustment process for hourly staff employees;
review hourly staff wage rates against regional and poverty line
benchmarks.
- Conduct benefits/payroll research and complete wage and benefit
surveys as required.
- Maintain benefits and payroll information on Business Office
Web site/ Earlham portal.
- Serve as an ex-officio on Earlham's Welfare Committee, College
Conference, United Way Campaign Committee, Diversity Progress
Committee and Safety Committee.

Personnel Processes and Employee Relations
- Provide direction, support and guidance to hiring supervisors
throughout recruitment, search and hiring processes for hourly
staff and administrative faculty vacancies, including compliance
with the College's affirmative action plan.
- Provide guidance to employees experiencing conflict in the workplace.
- Provide guidance and assistance with termination procedures for
non-teaching employees.
- Coordinate services for employees with disabilities.
- Coordinate performance appraisal procedures for hourly staff employees,
including 90-day reviews.
- Coordinate employee recognition program and events.
- Complete internal and external surveys on a timely basis.
- Direct office procedures which result in timely, accurate record
keeping and communication, and appropriate record retention.

Orientation and Training
- Coordinate employee entrance and exit procedures, including
new hourly staff orientation.
- Design and implement a bimonthly training and development program
for mid-level managers/supervisors.
- Design and manage orientation programs for new administrative faculty
hourly staff.
Qualifications
- Some college coursework is required, associate's, bachelor's
or master's degree is preferred; coursework in human resources
or organizational development is strongly preferred.
- 3 -5 years of full-time experience in a human resources and/or employee
benefits administration office is required; experience in an educational
setting is strongly preferred.
- Excellent planning and oral and written communication skills; the successful
candidate will be able to communicate effectively with all members of
the College community, and must be comfortable and effective in speaking
to large and small groups.
- Experience handling confidential information is required, including
employee health and wage information.
- Proficiency with personal computers, including experience with word
processing, spreadsheets, databases, e-mail and Windows/Microsoft
Office software; familiarity with payroll software is preferred; familiarity
with ADP payroll and HR software is strongly preferred; ability to
learn other software programs as needed.
- Thorough knowledge of legal and compliance issues with employment and benefits is required.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision; ability to resolve problems,
complete projects and respond to requests in a timely manner.
- Supervisory experience strongly is preferred.
Salary
Dependent on qualifications and experience.
