1827 Pioneer Association Collection. SC 229.

The 1827 Pioneer Association was formed in Richmond, Ind., to consist of residents of Wayne County born in the year 1827. The collection consists of the group's record book for 1891-1905, with reports of annual meetings and information, such as dates of birth and death, for members. The book also includes notations made by Argus Ogborn of Richmond. Purchase from Craig Wiechman, 2003.

Nicholas Easton Collection. SC 96.

Nicholas Easton (d.1674) was one of the first converts to Quakerism in New England and several times governor of Rhode Island. The collection consists of extracts from a diary and other papers concerning him made by Augustine Jones of Providence, Rhode Island, about 1900. Gift of Caroline Jones Woodman.

Economy Anti-Slavery Society Collection. SC 142.

Minutes and membership records of the Economy, Ind. Anti-Slavery Society, an organization advocating the immediate abolition of slavery, 1840. Transferred from the Harlow Lindley Collection, 1964.

Educational Association of Friends in America. SC 87.

Membership Book, 1880-1883. This group of Gurneyite Friends held annual conferences devoted to both secondary and higher education. Gift of Harlow Lindley, 1946.

Lizzie Edwards Diary. 1866. SC 20.

Lizzie Edwards (1835-1927) was a Friend of Spiceland, Ind. who later married Asa Holloway of Spiceland. Part of the diary was kept while teaching in a freedmen's school near Vicksburg, Mississippi. Photocopy; gift of Rosemary Holloway, 1988.

Thornton-Elleman Family Papers. 1810-1970. FMS 59.

This collection consists of correspondence, genealogical materials, business and legal documents, and other papers mainly relating to the family of Willis Thornton (1796-1874), an Orthodox Friend of Wayne County, Ind., and the Elleman family of Miami County, Ohio, and Wayne County.

Consists of a letter from Jacob Elliott, Randolph County, North Carolina, 1828; a transcript of the marriage certificate of Jacob Elliott and Mary Peelle, Deep Creek Monthly Meeting, Surry County, North Carolina, 1810; and a transcript of the marriage certificate of Solomon Elliott and Penelope Morris, Milford Monthly Meeting, Wayne County, Ind. Errol T. Elliott Papers. 1917-1980. FMS 17.

Errol T. Elliott (1895-1992) was a prominent Quaker pastor and administrator in Kansas, Iowa, and Indiana, president of William Penn College from 1942 to 1944, and executive secretary of the Five Years Meeting from 1944 to 1957. The Elliott Papers consist of correspondence, reminiscences, and writings reflecting his career, particularly his interest in Quaker history. Finding aid.

Embree-Thorn Papers. 1774-1997. FMS 80.

The Embree-Thorn Papers consist of letters, essays, wills, deeds, and other documents from two Quaker families in South Carolina, Tennessee, and Ohio, mainly between 1774 and 1860. They reflect the westward movement, anti-slavery activities, and business dealings of Friends. Most of the papers pertain to Thomas Embree (1755-1833) and his son-in-law William Thorn (1781-1853) of Green Plain Meeting, Ohio. Finding aid.

George P. Emswiler Collection. SC 126.

George P. Emswiler (1830-1898) was a Richmond merchant and local historian, best known for his Poems and Sketches (1897), which includes a number of reminiscences of Richmond, Ind. before the Civil War. The collection consists of two reminiscences of Richmond that are included, slightly revised in Poems and Sketches.

Evans-Kenworthy Collection. SC 41.

This collection has two parts. One consists of extracts from scrapbooks of the family of Mary (Evans) Kenworthy (1825-1901), a Friend of Richmond, Ind. pertaining to historical, Quaker, and Earlham topics. Included are photographs of Marcus Mote, portraits of Jesse Kenworthy (1827-1864), and his father-in-law, Thomas Evans (1791-1852), a prominent Friend of Waynesville, Ohio. The second part consists of typescripts of Evans family correspondence, 1821-1894, along with inventory of the original material, now in the Colorado Historical Society. Gift of Richard N. "Letters from George Evans to his family and Particular Friends at Spiceland, Indiana, describing the journey taken by him and Charles Osborn among Friends in Indiana, New York, New England, and other states in 1839 and 1840." Photocopy of typescript in Indiana Division, Indiana State Library. Evans (1802-1863) was a leading elder and assistant clerk of Indiana Yearly Meeting.
