This work offers concise overviews and discussions of everything from broad topics to specific places, people, congregations, etc. It also offers a very important tool for the researcher; each entry concludes with a bibliography of recommended resources for more in-depth research. A Brethren Bibliography, 1713-1963, by Donald F. Durnbaugh and Lawrence W. Shultz. Brethren Life and Thought, 9, nos. 1-2 (Winter-Spring1964).
Ref BX 7811 .D8 1964
This special issue of BLT provides a bibliography of sources in chronological order. To find sources on a particular topic, use the subject index published with the 1966 update. (The 1966, 1970, and 1986 updates can be found in Lilly Reference in a supplemental volume.) There are occasional updates to Brethren bibliography published in Brethren Life and Thought (see example in the journal articles section below). For more recent coverage you could also consult Durnbaugh's bibliographic essay in The Church of the Brethren Yesterday and Today, or the bibliography in Dale Stoffer's Background and Development of Brethren Doctrines.
ATLA Religion Database

Earlham Libraries Online Catalog
Search by Author keywords or Title keywords to find items listed in the bibliographies above.
Search by Keywords anywhere to find other books that contain information on your subject. Examples: "brethren anointing," "brethren ohio," "brethren conference minutes."
Try Subject keywords searches on the subject heading "Church of the Brethren," combined with words from subject subdivisions such as "Doctrines," "History," "Missions," and particular states, districts, or countries.
To determine if Lilly subscribes to a particular journal, and what years we have, do a Title keywords search on the name of the journal (not the article) and limit the search to Format: Periodicals. Journals are on the lower level of the building, north side. Issues older than 1980 are at the back of the room in compact shelving.
If you live far from campus, you may be eligible to have books and article photocopies mailed to you. Please read the policy carefully and use the forms on this page.
