SciFinder Scholar (Chemical Abstracts / MEDLINE)
Indexes worldwide literature on chemistry and medicine, 1967 to present. Available in Earlham public computer labs and in the Chemistry Department.

General Science Abstracts
Indexes periodicals on astronomy, biology, chemistry, earth sciences, math, medicine, and physics, 1983 to present. Earlham subscribes to almost all of the content, either as online full text or as print.

Web of Science (Science Citation Index)
Keyword and citation indexing of major journals across scientific disciplines, 1981 to present. Web of Science also includes Arts & Humanities Citation Index and Social Sciences Citation Index.

Academic Search Premier
Comprehensive index to scholarly journals and general periodicals in all subject and interdisciplinary areas, including full text. Coverage prior to 1990 is sparse.

JSTOR
Full text of hundreds of scholarly journals in all disciplines dating back to the 1700s. Archival, rather than current: coverage stop 3-5 years from the present.

MEDLINE
Indexes and abstracts the biomedical literature; includes over 12 million citations from 1966 to the present. This EBSCOHost version of MEDLINE provides advanced search features, such as limiting to Earlham's holdings or to specific types of literature (clinical trials, review articles, etc.). Links to online fulltext articles in PubMed Central and online fulltext articles from journal publishers. Not all online fulltext is free.

PubMed
Indexes and abstracts the biomedical literature; includes over 12 million citations from 1966 to the present. This NCBI version of MEDLINE lacks specialized search features. Links to online fulltext articles in PubMed Central and online fulltext articles from journal publishers. Not all online fulltext is free.

The world's largest library catalog, covering books and other materials available in OCLC member libraries around the globe.

Web Sites

Dictionary of Units
Provides a summary of most of the units of measurement in use today, along with the appropriate conversions needed to change them into standard units of the SI system. Includes access to 40 different calculators for automatic conversions, and a printable pocket guide listing the most common conversion units.

Chemistry Central
Open-access site for peer-reviewed research in chemistry. Provides free full text access to articles in Chemistry Central Journal and journals from BioMed Central (BMC), including Beilstein Journal of Organic Chemistry.

PubChem
Provides access to three databases containing information on millions of compounds and substances and data from over 800 BioAssays. Users can search for physical data, structures, specific molecules, and targets of bioactivity, among other information.

The Molecule of the Month
Highlights a different molecule each month, providing information including historical background, chemical structure, synonyms, biological relevance, toxicity levels, physical and chemical properties, etc., as well as a 3-D image of the molecule and links to web sites with additional information. Previous month's molecules remain listed on the site as well.

Chem 1 Virtual Textbook
Created as an alternate or supplement to textbooks for general and environmental chemistry classes; provides tutorials, interactive online assigments, and simulations and covers weights, measures, bonding, thermochemistry, and many other topics.

Chemical Information: SIS-Specialized Information Services
Provides access to ChemIDplus, a free web-based search system which contains "more than 380,000 chemicals, synonyms, structures, regulatory list information, and links to other databases."

Reddy's forensic page
A comprehensive list of more than 1,000 web pages on forensic science. Topics include organizations, conferences, journals, college/university forensic science programs, public/private/governmental labs, e-mail lists, law enforcement agencies, and the varied divisions of forensic science (forensic entomology, odontology, statistics, psychology, nursing, etc.).

Hazardous substances data bank (HSDB)
A cluster of nine databases containing toxicology data on file at the National Library of Medicine's Toxicology Data Network. Find information on the toxicology of potentially hazardous chemicals and substances, including information on human exposure, emergency handling, regulatory requirements, environmental fate, industrial hygiene, and related areas.

Tox Town
Provides information on everyday locations where one might find toxic chemicals, resources on environmental health topics and how the environment can impact human health, links to authoritative chemical information on the internet, and non-technical description of chemicals.

ToxSeek
Provides data on toxic substances and environmental health information from the National Library of Medicine. Allows users to search a combination of 47 databases, with information from U.S. and international sources, including the NIH, the World Health Organzation, and PubMed.

Household Products Database
Database from the National Library of Medicine that links over 7,000 consumer brands to health effects from Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) provided by manufacturers and allows scientists and consumers to research products based on chemical ingredients.
