Installed Gallery 3.o beta 3 onto Sergius. Posted details to Gallery forum
Sandbox Gallery Problem with display going from portrait to landscape.
Added 3nids theme but this only works properly with the git codex

To Do

Use git to get the latest update.
transfer database config file
get 3nids theme operational

It's apparent that the University of Mary Washington is saddled with Blackboard. So they've been forced to think outside the box and the result is a beautiful (and I mean beautiful as well as well designed) WordPress-MU site http://umwblogs.org/. Here's what I mean:

Talk about the Bioinformatics 471 blog and how it might have been different on Moodle. Focus on content and student participation the learning process. Still uses Bb for grades.

I found this in Martha Burtis blog from University of Mary Washington: What Lies Within: Of Calendars, Hidden Data, and Hacked Templates

In the meantime, I kept searching for plugins that might afford me some solution. And then I stumbled on the motherload: KB Advanced RSS Widget. If you’ve ever struggled with the default RSS feed widget in WP and wanted more control over how feeds are presented, CHECK OUT THIS PLUGIN. Basically, it allows you to customize how feed items are displayed on a very granular level.

Acta Physica

Acta PHYSICA is an interesting site. Basically, the blogs and comments and all the featured articles are all run by WP MU (eg Stop the LHC – until we know it’s SAFE! ) and the home is the WP MU top page. However, clicking Empowering the Physics community gets you to a characteristic Elgg home with the Acta Physica banner graphic pasted on top. Meanwhile the wiki is provided by MediaWiki:

The problems with this approach is that you have three different systems to integrate, maintain and update and the connections between them are not all that tight. It's interesting that they chose to use WP MU for the main content. My guess is that had BuddyPress been available they would have used that instead of Elgg. So the final piece of the puzzle is, where's the wiki component for BuddyPress?

Just what I need:
"How can I hide the "group create" option from a user? I only want the admin to create a group." here
Answer:

Easiest way would be to use the WPMU function is_site_admin() to determine if the currently logged in user is a site admin, and then hide the buttons accordingly in your template.
Then, you can create a custom function in plugins/bp-custom.php to redirect a user if they try to access the group creation URL directly.

To cut to the chase, this post is about using WordPress MU and BuddyPress with enterprise authentication (LDAP) to create an internal/private social network while leaving the blogs, by default, public.
Very interesting post and very germane to our efforts here. And following a link from this blog we get to Integrating WPMu, BuddyPress, and bbPress and a useful tutorial. Stop Press! This tutorial may now (Sept 09) be redundant since things are a lot easier to install now.

This WP plugin downloadable here is worth testing with WP-MU.
What it offers:

Edit Roles: Edit your user roles and their capabilities.
New Roles: Create new roles for use on your site.
Content Permissions: Adds a meta box on your write post/page editor that allows you to restrict content to specific roles.
Widgets: Adds a login form widget and user-listing widget that you can use in any widget area on your site.

How to do group blogs in BuddyPress

This forum posting Blog Link on Group Page was fascinating because it's exactly what I needed:

Does anyone know of a way (or plugin) to link a blog directly to a group meaning there is a link on the group page which will take you to a blog only group members can access? Similar to the way forums are linked to groups currently utilizing bbPress.
I have a client that wants to post video and images and currently the only solution I know of is to create a blog for each group where they can post media. However if there is no way to link the blog to the group the users won't know the blog exist.

Burt Adsit replied with the solution:

You'll have to modify the group theme templates to display your 'group blog' link someplace and then you can use (blatant self-serving recommendation) http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/bp-community-blogs/ to allow automatic registered user status for all members of a group on a specific blog.

This looks very interesting.

The core BuddyPress objects on which rights can be set:
xprofile fields
activity stream actions
friends list
groups list
messaging

status updates

The basic access levels configurable per object (some objects offer only a subset of these rights):
allow/deny anyone (globally public or globally private). This is accomplished by setting an object's viewing rights to either "All Users" or "Only Me"
allow only "Logged in Users" to view a given object
allow only friends to view a given object
allow only a specific list of users to view a given object. This is also called per user access control. This is accomplished by setting an object's viewing rights to "These Users Only" and then entering a comma-separated list of usernames (a member's login name) in a textbox that becomes visible.

Migrate 0.9 to 1.5

AT LAST

Alistair has released a utility he calls oddbod. Oddbod plugin on Elgg.org. The interesting thing about this is it's mode of operation. You run a utility for 0.9 (whether this is a 0.9 plugin or stand along app running against the database, I don't know) and it exports the 0.9 content as ODD XML files. Then you add another mod to 1.5 and import the 'ODD'ies.

Oddbod likes onions, which is why the data is layered onto 1.5. It’s more manageable, building up each layer, one on top of the other and you can test at each stage to see if Oddbod is behaving. I’ve tested it between 0.9.2 and 1.5 and it works ok for me. If you fancy jolting the volts into Oddbod, flick that switch and drop me a line if there’s any problems.

Diego Adnres Ramirez Aragon has released a migration tool 1.0 but:

"There is some details for fix to make it work with Elgg 1.5."

So I'm not so sure about this one.
