The STARS program publicly reports comprehensive information related to a college or university’s sustainability performance.
Earlham Earns High Marks in Sustainability
June 17, 2013
Earlham College has received a STARS Bronze Rating in recognition of its sustainability achievements from the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE). STARS, the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System, is a program that measures and encourages sustainability in all aspects of higher education.
“I am particularly proud of our institution’s efforts in Sustainability Planning and see the Sustainability Plan produced by our Sustainability Advisory Committee as an innovative and bright vision for Sustainability at Earlham moving forward," wrote President David Dawson in a letter accompanying the rating.
"With the recent hiring of a full time Sustainability Coordinator, our sustainability programs and initiatives have been given increased time, attention, and have met with increased success. Our efforts in the realms of education for sustainability both in the curriculum and co-curriculum are also particularly strong, and I am pleased to see them highlighted in the STARS report.”
AASHE’s STARS program is the only one of its kind that involves publicly reporting comprehensive information related to a college or university’s sustainability performance. Participants report achievements in three overall areas: 1) education & research, 2) operations, and 3) planning, administration & engagement.
“STARS was developed by the campus sustainability community to provide high standards for recognizing campus sustainability efforts,” said AASHE Executive Director Paul Rowland. “Earlham College has demonstrated a substantial commitment to sustainability by achieving a STARS Bronze Rating and is to be congratulated for their efforts.”
Unlike other rating or ranking systems, this program is open to all institutions of higher education in the U.S. and Canada, and the criteria that determine a STARS Rating are transparent and accessible to anyone. Because STARS is a program based on credits earned, it allows for both internal comparisons as well as comparisons with similar institutions.
“We are excited that the STARS program allows us to share our sustainability efforts and measure our progress on sustainability integration across the campus”, noted Earlham’s Sustainability Coordinator, Sarah Waddle, “Sustainability is here to stay, and we are confident our continued commitment to sustainability will help us achieve an even higher rating in the future.”
