The next stage of my time abroad has begun as I leave Salvador to conduct my Independent Study Project (ISP)—three and a half weeks to do research and write a 40-page paper about that research. My ISP is an assessment of health problems and community perspectives towards a petroleum refinery on an island in the Bay of All Saints, Brasil. Today has been absolutely beautiful- hot, breezy, and felt just like an Indiana summer. I spent most of the day in my room- packing up from a semester’s mess and disorganization but taking some breaks to do last minute errands on campus and meet the myriad of family members coming in for all my upperclassman-housemate’s graduation. For the last week or so, we have been staying in Santo Antonio de Jesus, which is located in the interior of Bahia, a few hours from Salvador. It is a rapidly growing city and we came here to continue to look at the health care system of Brazil. We spent the week (Tuesday through Friday) visiting health posts and had a free weekend. Before I came to Brazil, I thought long and hard about gifts to bring my host family. In the end, I brought maple syrup and so of course I had to make them pancakes!  I took my grandmother’s buttermilk pancake recipe and sat down with my Portuguese instructor and Google translater to figure out the ingredients.
