Welcome to Parents of New Earlham Students
June 9, 2009
Dear Parents of First Year and Transfer
Students,
Welcome to Earlham College and the Richmond community. The weekend of orientation events listed below will help you get to know Earlham better and give you an opportunity to meet some of the people who will be making an impact on your student's life during the next few years. We really enjoyed the orientation weekend with our daughter, Merry Faller, back in 2007. We encourage you to attend the events which have been created especially for parents and/or parents and students.
Friday, August 21:
Admissions staff will host a Hospitality and
Information Table in
the Richmond Room of the Landrum Bolling Center from 8:00
a.m. to noon. Come by for coffee and answers to any questions you
might have.
Welcome at Chase Stage in front
of Lilly Library, 2:15 - 3:45 p.m. You will be introduced to the
student leaders of New Student Orientation and several college
administrators. Highlights include the inspiring comments
about a liberal arts education, and Nancy Sinex's
description of the fascinating, accomplished and talented incoming
class.
All Parent Gathering: Student Service Panel in
Goddard Auditorium, 7:30 - 9:00 p.m. You may be tired by this time
but this is your chance to get any last minutes questions answered
from Residence Life, Counseling, Health Services, Campus Safety
and Security, and the Academic Enrichment Center.
Saturday, August 22:
Breakfast for Parents with College Representatives in the Comstock
Room in Runyan Center, 8:00 a.m. A chance to chat with college administrators and parents. Geographic seating opportunities will allow you to locate other Earlham parents near your home.
All Student and Parent Gathering: Engaging
with the Curriculum in Goddard Auditorium, 9:15 - 10:15
a.m. You really don't want to miss this opportunity to hear about
Earlham's general education program as well as the expansive
offerings available in the curriculum.
Talking About Letting Go and Staying
Connected, meet
in the Atrium of the Landrum Bolling Center at 10:30 a.m. In small groups, you will have time to talk about the challenges and joys of leaving your student at College.
We hope these recommendations guide you in making your orientation to Earlham fruitful. If you need to pick up some last minute items for your student, and you will, there are plenty of national chains and local shops for all of your basic needs. Our favorite casual restaurants are El Rodeo and Little Shebas. If you are interested in a more formal dining experience, the Olde Richmond Inn and Galo’s Italian Grill are excellent.
Our family has truly enjoyed our Earlham experience. We hope the next few years allow you the same opportunity.
Sincerely,
Sarah and Keith Faller
