Strategic Planning Committee
Minutes/Notes - Wednesday, February 13, 2002
Teague Library

Present: Margaret Hampton, Wes Miller, Sara Penhale, Newell Pledger-Shinn, Rick Foreman, Tamara Clark, Monteze Snyder, Paul Ogren, Tamara Clark, Doug Bennett (by speaker phone), Bob Southard, Kirsten Bohl

Discussion of Draft White Papers
We discussed drafts of several white papers, which we'll continue to revise:
-Retention (Bob)
-Facilities (Wes, Rick)
-Development and Alumni Relations (Doug)
-Student Life (Newell, Nancy, Tamara)

Sara also distributed a revised version of the Community Life white paper, which we didn't discuss.

Board Workshop
In preparation for the Feb. 21 workshop with some Board members on strategic planning, we agreed to finish revising, and to post copies of, 5 white papers on the Web site in the next couple of days: Admissions, Retention, Fund Raising, Facilities and Liberal Arts.

Sara to work on the posting of white papers (once the final drafts are posted to the list serv). Sara and Kirsten to work on getting board members email access to the pages (an Earlham password will be required). Doug to email the Strategic Planning Committee on Monday morning with a game plan for the Feb. 21 workshop with the board. Likely areas of focus: (1) enrollment, financial aid, and budget situation; (2) perceptions of academic excellence and challenge; (3) large pieces of strategic work going on around campus - e.g., learning and technology, diversity, general education, residence life.

We reflected that many of the white papers have an internal focus. What kinds of additional research into external (environmental) factors will we need to do in order to write our report?

Monteze will continue to work on distilling some of the data we've already collected.

The minutes of February 6 were approved.

Next Meeting
Next meeting will be Wed., Feb. 20 from 3:00 till 6:00 p.m. in Teague Library. We'll prepare for the Board workshop on Feb. 21; and we'll discuss drafts of all remaining white papers:

-Curriculum (Bob)
-Budget (Doug)
-Faculty and Students (Sara)
-Financial Aid (Monteze)
-Community Life (Sara)
-Student Life (Newell et al.)
-Assessment/Institutional Research (Doug)

(Bob Southard will be present for either the first half or the second half of the Feb. 20 meeting.)

(Previously on email: Kirsten said a meeting with Philosophy and Religion had been arranged for Monday, Feb. 25 at 3:00 p.m. in Carpenter 323.)
