VIII. Community Life
  1. Non-Academic Affairs

    Non-Academic Affairs of the community have been delegated by the faculty, with the concurrence of the Board, to the Committee on Campus Life, which is composed of students, faculty, staff and administrators. Actions of the Committee on Campus Life are subject directly to review and approval by the President of the College. Student Government and all student organizations and activities operate within the framework of policies and procedures approved by the Committee on Campus Life. Copies of such policies and procedures are available in the office of the President, the Dean of Student Development, and on the Earlham Web site.

  2. Principles and Practices of the Earlham Community

    Expectations of the conduct of community members — students, teaching and administrative faculty, and staff — are stated in Principles and Practices of the Earlham College Community, which is approved by the Student Government, the Faculty, the President and the Board of Trustees, and is periodically reviewed and revised.

  3. College Committees Concerned with Community Life

    • Committee on Campus Life

      Charge: Advises the Office of Student Development on all aspects of co-curricular life, reviews and makes recommendations on all policies related to housing, campus communications, student activities, health and wellness, counseling, career planning, campus safety and security, student conduct, campus ministry, supportive services, and the food service; convenes All-Campus Meetings to discuss significant issues as needed; oversees periodic revisions of Principles and Practices of the Earlham College Community; discusses campus issues; and sends minutes of viewpoint to the Faculty Meeting and other groups.

      Membership: Dean of Student Development, representative from Student Development Staff, Director of Student Activities (and advisor to Student Government), Director of Multicultural Affairs, one member of the administrative faculty, one hourly staff representative, three members of the teaching faculty, President, Vice-President, Secretary of Finance and Recording Clerk of Student Government, and three at-large student representatives.

    • College Judiciary Council and CJC Faculty Pool

      Charge: CJC hears cases of alleged social and academic violations assigned to them by the Judicial Advisor (Academic Dean). It determines responsibility for such violations and assigns sanctions appropriate to the circumstances. This body has jurisdiction over all very serious violations, where the sanctions would likely include suspension from the non-academic life of the College, suspension from the College or expulsion from the College. It is also hears appeals rising out of SJC decisions.

      Membership: The CJC Faculty Pool is a group of three faculty members not otherwise affiliated with Student Development and selected by the Faculty Nominating Committee for three-year, overlapping terms. Members of this pool function as Hearing Officers and faculty representatives on CJC and the Appeals Board. A CJC is made up of one faculty member, assigned in rotation from the CJC Faculty Pool, and two students and two student alternates selected by the Student Nominating Committee. A non-consensing Hearing Officer is also part of the group.

    • Environmental Responsibility Committee

      Charge: The Environmental Responsibility Committee monitors and encourages the implementation of the Earlham Environmental Plan, provides consistent and long-term oversight and coordination for campus environmentally-oriented activities, serves as the central point of information and education on campus environmental issues, and makes recommendations to appropriate persons or college units.

      Membership: Director of Facilities (ex officio), two members of the administrative faculty, two members of the teaching faculty, two hourly staff representatives and two student representatives.

    • Harassment Board

      Charge: Participates in on-going campus education programs on harassment, hears cases involving harassment when the alleged offender is a staff or faculty member.

      Membership: Two faculty members, two faculty alternates, two staff members, and two students. Faculty and staff shall have three-year overlapping terms.
