Residence Life Policies
Housing Exemptions
Earlham is a residential college
and all enrolled students
are required to live in College housing. A very limited number
of exemptions to live in non-college housing are granted each year.
The College reserves the right to fill its residence facilities
before granting exemptions from College housing. Students who are
granted permission to live in non-college housing are classified
as exempt.
The following
exemptions are granted:
1. Automatic Exemptions:
Students in the following categories are
not required to live in College housing:
(a) Married students
(b) Students who have dependent children residing
with them
(c) Students who reside with their parents/guardians
(in Wayne County, IN, or Preble County, OH)
(d) Students who turn 23 years of age by January
1 of the following year
(e) Students who are officially registered as “part-time” or “special” as
approved by the Registrar
(f) Super Seniors as defined by Housing Selection Information
(g) Veterans
2. Upperclass Exemptions:
Permission to live in
non-College housing is granted to a limited number of upperclass
students. The number
of upperclass exemptions is determined by the number of students
returning in the fall balanced against the number of available
housing spaces. Exemptions are awarded by lottery number during
the Spring Housing Process. Those who do not acquire exemptions
will be placed on a waiting list in lottery number order. The number
of housing exemptions is determined by the Office of Residence
Life and the Vice President for Financial Affairs.
3. Special Exemptions:
Students who feel that special circumstances (e.g. medical, psychological)
necessitate their living in non-College housing may petition for
an exemption prior to the deadline listed in the Housing Selection
Information. The petition should describe these special circumstances
in detail and must convincingly demonstrate the uniqueness of
the student’s
case. Petitions are reviewed by the Special Housing Request Committee.

Guidelines which govern room selection, placement,
waiting lists, etc. are available from the Office of Residence
