Smoking Policy
Approved by the Committee on Campus Life, April 2005;
Amended by the President, August 2006

Earlham College recognizes the needs of those who smoke and the conflicting needs of those who do not smoke, including those for whom smoke is a significant health hazard. Consistent with Earlham’s interest in promoting a healthy community, and to address the conflicting needs of smokers and nonsmokers, Earlham’s smoking policy is as follows:

Campus Wide Policy

Smoking is not permitted inside any building on the Earlham campus including residential facilities, academic buildings, libraries and athletic facilities. Smoking also is not permitted on any of the covered porches of Earlham buildings.

Smoking outdoors is regulated. When possible, designated smoking areas are clearly marked with signs and have a place to properly dispose of cigarette butts. Those who choose to smoke are not permitted to do so in the immediate vicinity of building entrances. Smokers must maintain a separation distance of at least twenty feet (20’) from all academic and residence hall windows, doors and air intake vents. (Please note that in cases of a sidewalk approaching a building at an angle, this distance is greater than 20 linear feet along that sidewalk. For Carpenter, this distance is 28 linear feet). It is expected that all smokers will responsibly dispose of smoking-related wastes in the receptacles provided in these designated areas.

Outdoor smoking is prohibited in the spectator areas of all Earlham Athletic events. Smoking is also prohibited on the grassy area within the circular walk on the north side of Earlham Hall.

We ask smokers to be aware of others and refrain from smoking while in transit on campus sidewalks.

Smoking is not allowed within the covered porch areas of Barrett, Norwich, Olvey-Andis, Hoerner and Mills halls, and on porches and stoops of on-campus houses.
