Douglas Bennett has been President and Professor of Politics at Earlham College, since July 1997.
From 1994 to 1997 he was Vice President and chief operating officer of the American Council of Learned Societies in New York City, and from 1989 to 1993 he was the Vice President and Provost at Reed College, in Portland, Oregon.
From 1973 to 1989 he was a member of the Political Science Department at Temple University in Philadelphia. His scholarly publications include Transnational Corporations Versus the State: the Political Economy of the Mexican Automobile Industry, co-authored with Kenneth Sharpe (Princeton University Press, 1985), and many articles on transnational corporations in developing countries, immigration, and other topics in public policy and in higher education.
He has a B.A. from Haverford College, and M. Phil and Ph.D. in Political Science from Yale University.
He currently chairs the National Advisory Board for the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE), a board on which he has served since 2000. He also serves on the Board of Directors for the Council for Aid to Education, which oversees the Collegiate Learning Assesssment (CLA), and on the National Advisory Panel for the National Institute for Learning OUtcomes Assessment (NILOA). From 2002 to 2006 he served on the Board of the National Association of Independent Colleges, and served as its Chair in 2005.
From 1988 to 2000 he served on the Board of Managers of Haverford College. He currently serves on the Corporation of the American Friends Service Committee, and in the past has served on various of its advisory committees including the Executive Committee of the New York Metropolitan Regional Office, the National Community Relations Committee, and the Latin America Panel of the International Division.
He is married to Ellen Trout Bennett, and has two sons, Tommy (born 1984) and Robbie (born 2003). He is a member of 15th Street Meeting in New York Yearly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers).
