Toronto Star: "C'mon, it's not all bad"
In an article attempting to look “beyond the veil of criminality that surrounds graffiti culture” and celebrate an increasingly influential “means of self-expression in a landscape dominated by corporate imagery,” Toronto Star writer Christopher Hutsul cites the upcoming Watson Fellowship project of graduating Earlham senior Laura Sweitzer ‘06 as evidence that graffiti is “starting to get its due in academic realms.” Read more

First N.I.H. Grant Funds Malaria Study
Earlham’s science facilities will gain an important new piece of equipment — an automated DNA sequencer — as part of a $164,000 grant from the National Institutes of Health for malaria genome research by Assistant Professor of Biology Peter Blair and students.
WMUB Forum: Service Vacations
Earlham student Laurel Johnson ‘07 and Director of Quaker and Campus Ministries Trayce Peterson shared some of their experiences from a spring break “clean up and reconstruction” service trip to the Gulf Coast region devastated by Hurricane Katrina during the April 28 broadcast of WMUB Forum, a weekly program on the region’s National Public Radio (NPR) affiliate.

Boston Globe: Warren Improves World Record in Boston Battle
The Boston Globe reports on the 2006 Boston Marathon and a world record “joggling” duel between Canadian Michal Karpal, looking to reclaim his crown, and Earlham alumnus Zach Warren ’03, who set the new world standard for juggling a marathon in November (free registration may be required). Preceding the race the two runners, who compete for charity, also spoke with Debbie Elliott, host of National Public Radio’s All Things Considered.

"Writings" Win Watson Fellowship
Laura Sweitzer ‘06 topped nearly 1,000 candidates from colleges and universities nationwide to earn one of just 50 prestigious Watson Fellowships. Starting in July she’ll look at the cultural impact of graffiti — “The Writings on the Wall” — in at least 11 cities on three continents.
Earlham is a "Best Value" Times Two
The Princeton Review’s newest guidebook ranks Earlham among the Top 10 “best value” colleges in the nation. The influential Fiske Guide to Colleges also named Earlham a “Best Buy” in 2005.

International Students Changing "Face" of Athletics, As Well
In his first two decades as the Earlham men’s soccer coach, Roy Messer had just two international players go through his program. Now, though, the College is “profile of success” in terms of its international outreach and programming and this year, Earlham’s second in a row with record foreign enrollment, Messer counted five overseas student-athletes on his roster.

Indianapolis Star: "Making College Possible for Many"
Ahead of hearings by U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings’ Commission on the Future of Higher Education in Indianapolis April 6-7, Earlham President Doug Bennett writes in an Op-Ed submission to The Indianapolis Star that government leaders in Washington should view higher education not in terms of cost-cutting to reduce the federal budget deficit, but rather as an investment in the nation’s economic future.
