Joseph McCarthy trouble Earlham Professor Emeritus of English Paul Lacey as he takes in the revelations of more recent covert surveillance by the government on its own citizens. Writing in the Philadelphia Inquirer, the current chair of the board of the American Friends Service Committee reflects on more than 50 years of government scrutiny of the AFSC and other civil rights organizations and wonders “what is happening in this country to allow eavesdropping on private citizens, militarizing law enforcement, and wasting time, energy and taxpayer dollars attempting to criminalize legal and principled dissent?”
