DEBATE OVER ARMED CAMPUS GUARDS ON HISTORIC 'PEACE' CAMPUSES
In the wake of the Virginia Tech and Northern Illinois University shootings, campuses across the country are taking stock of their approaches to safety and security. At colleges associated with the historic peace churches, such as Earlham, some are wrestling with the notion of using armed guards on campus. In a Religion News Service article printed in the Washington Post, Cathy Anthofer, EC director of safety and security says the College has defined campus emergencies and that it is not a "reactive institution."

President Bennett Speaks Out About College Admissions with Dan Rather
Earlham President Douglas C. Bennett appears with three other college presidents discussing today’s flawed college admissions process during a recent episode of HDNet’s Dan Rather Reports titled ''Stress Test: Getting Into College.'' Originally aired on May 27, 2008, the program takes a behind-the-scenes look at the high-stakes, high money world of the college admissions process. Bennett’s comments appear about 42 minutes in and last for about eight minutes.

QUAKERS PARTICIPATE IN NATIONAL TRACK MEET
Two Earlham athletes, Sara Bohall (women's 400-meter hurdles) and Chris Shaw (men's discus), will compete at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships beginning on May 22.

(Length - 16:05) -- Earlham College's Friends Collection is one of the four or five largest such collections in the world, with more than 12,000 books and other records going back to the 17th century when the Society of Friends was founded. Collecting these Quaker materials is a passion for College Archivist Thomas D. Hamm. Evan Burks '08 has Hamm tell some fascinating stories from the College's past and shows him some of the more intriguing pieces in the collection -- things like the Quaker chamber pot.

MANY FACTORS AT PLAY IN LONG LIFE SPANS OF TORTOISES
Turtles live life slower, which is why they live it longer, says Earlham professor of biology John Iverson in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Turtles and tortoises hibernate and sleep a great deal, but some say that their longevity may be due to factors other than extremely slow metabolism.

NCAC Women's Sprinter/Hurdler of the Year
Sara Bohall '08 made history as the first Earlham woman to win the same event at a conference meet in four consecutive years with a first-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles at the 2008 NCAC Outdoor Track Championships on May 2.
ART GRADUATE HEADS TO THE MET
Harry Perez '08 was one of only 12 interns selected from more than 900 applicants for a prestigious internship at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Perez had applied for an internship in the Arts of Africa, Oceania and the Americas department, but because the lead curator of that department will be away this summer, Perez will intern in Public Relations.
