QUAKERS PARTICIPATE IN NATIONAL TRACK MEET

Two Earlham athletes, Sara Bohall (women's 400-meter hurdles) and Chris Shaw (men's discus), will compete at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships beginning on May 22.

NCAC Women's Sprinter/Hurdler of the Year

Sara Bohall '08 made history as the first Earlham woman to win the same event at a conference meet in four consecutive years with a first-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles at the 2008 NCAC Outdoor Track Championships on May 2.

All-TIME HITS LEADER TO GRADUATE FROM EARLHAM

Eric Sturgeon '08 became Earlham's all-time hits leader during the final weekend of his collegiate baseball career. The Logansport, Ind., native also set school career records in batting average and doubles.

The Earlham Equestrian Team has had one of its best show seasons ever, and members attribute part of their success to the team’s enthusiastic spirit. Eight riders have qualified for the IHSA Regionals in April.

EC ALUM LEADS PREP TEAM TO STATE FOOTBALL TITLE

Attributing much of his gridiron coaching success to his Earlham experiences on and off the field, Steve Specht '90 has guided St. Xavier High School in Cincinnati to Ohio Division I football championships in 2005 and 2007.

PRESIDENT BENNETT SAYS TWO GROUPS WITHIN DIVISION III IS NOT BEST SOLUTION

Earlham President Doug Bennett, also the current president of the North Coast Athletic Association, weighs in on hoped-for changes within NCAA Division III athletics in an article in Inside Higher Ed. It's been 35 years since the NCAA has made major changes in membership, and in that time Division III membership has surged. The diverse philosophies of so many schools, says Bennett, "make life increasingly awkward."

HILLARY CARTER'S HISTORY-MAKING KICK

Hillary Carter split the uprights for an extra point in the Quakers' 31-14 victory at Hiram on Oct. 27. The junior from Middletown, Ohio, is the first female student-athlete to play in a football game for Earlham. For more information on Hillary, see our original profile.

EC ATHLETES IN THE PINK

Whether it's field hockey bandanas, football helmet stickers, cross country wristbands, soccer warm-ups or volleyball uniforms, Earlham's sports teams are recognizing National Breast Cancer Awareness Month by wearing some pink at home events this week.

Team Welcomes First Female Football Player

The Earlham Quakers kicked off their 2007-2008 season with a new kicker -- junior Hillary Carter, the College's first female football player on the sidelines. Carter, who did not play in the home opener, may be the only female currently playing college football in the U.S.

An All-American Performance by Walker Yane

Passing half the field, Walker Yane placed eighth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the NCAA Division III Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championships on May 25. The recent graduate is Earlham's first NCAA Division III All-American in men's track and field.

Senior Sara Bohall led Earlham with first-place finishes in the women's 100- and 400-meter hurdles at the North Coast Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships on May 4.

Yane Earns Major Honor at Conference Meet

Walker Yane is the North Coast Athletic Conference's Middle Distance/Distance Runner of the Year in men's track and field. The senior captured first place in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the NCAC Outdoor Championships on May 4.

Major Honors Bestowed in Basketball

The North Coast Athletic Conference has selected senior Markous Jewett to its First Team in men's basketball and has named first-year student Shontavia Davis as its “Co-Newcomer of the Year” in women's basketball.

Be Loud, Be Proud, Be Positive

Earlham and all nine of its fellow North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) member schools are among the more than 300 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) institutions participating in a Fan Sportsmanship Program sponsored by the Division III Commissioners Association. “It is important for us to take this kind of stand,” says Nelson Bingham, long-time faculty representative to Earlham's Athletics Committee and the College's newly-named provost. Perhaps, Bingham adds, the symbolic meaning of this gesture by Earlham and other Division III colleges can, in some small part, counter the “corrosive atmosphere” surrounding so much of athletics and fan behavior in society at-large and ensure “that we remain faithful to the ideals of varsity sports that have served our schools and our students so well for generations.”

International Students Changing "Face" of Athletics, As Well

In his first two decades as the Earlham men's soccer coach, Roy Messer had just two international players go through his program. Now, though, the College is “profile of success” in terms of its international outreach and programming and this year, Earlham's second in a row with record foreign enrollment, Messer counted five overseas student-athletes on his roster.
